May 2012 Message

Most of us in our Rotary District do not realize how similar and diverse our District is, and how different each club is.  One of the most rewarding experience for me during this Rotary year has been  getting to know the clubs in our District.  Each club has its own culture and its own signature project, yet all of us believe in the Rotary core values and the mission of the Rotary Foundation.
Service Above Self is the Rotary motto and community service is the core strength of the clubs in our district.  I can go on and on about wonderful community service projects being done by the Rotarians in our communities.
A Chinese proverb comes to my mind that has been quoted by the Past RI President, Clifford Dochterman.  If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.

The Rotary Club of Austin-Oak Hill is working hard to better our community through education, literacy, mentoring and much more. As members of the southwest Austin community for thirty years, we feel we have made a significant impact in our community.  We want to encourage your support to raise the funds necessary for our programs to benefit the youth of our community. We invite you to come out to Falconhead and play golf or make a donation to support us.  This year you will be able to register and pay online.

We are here tonight celebrating the generosity of the District Rotarians in their contributions to The Rotary Foundation.  But it is not all about the money!!  It is about the service Rotarians do to eliminate poverty, disease, and lack of education in our world.

DGN Rich Kaye is being  presented with The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service.

In 2011-12, I will ask Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity . I will ask you to search first within yourselves, to understand that all of us, everywhere, have the same dreams, the same hopes, the same aspirations, and similar dilemmas. When we understand, and truly feel, that others’ needs are the same as our own, we begin to understand how important our work is.................Together, we will Reach Within to Embrace Humanity . And in peace, harmony, and friendship, we will bring change – and a more joyful world.
