It’s hard to believe that in Leelanau County, one of the wealthiest counties in Michigan, over 10% of the population is food insecure, 18% of children live in poverty, and roughly 45% of the students in the county qualify for school-day food assistance. And the number of children in the county that qualify for food assistance is on the rise.
Why is childhood hunger such a concern? When children are hungry, they can find it difficult to concentrate and learn in school, which not only affects today’s academic promise, but can also limit their future economic productivity. Furthermore, children who don’t get the nutrition they need may have their future physical and mental health compromised. The bottom line: the effects of hunger on children can last a lifetime.

In 2012 District 6290 was awarded a 3-year Public Image grant from Rotary International. As a result we have a $16,000 annual budget which is offered to our clubs through a matching grant program to support local public relations initiatives.
Don't miss this outstanding opportunity to promote Rotary International and your local club. During the past two years we have helped fund public relations campaigns for twenty-two District 6290 clubs. Projects have included the re-launch of club websites, social media ad campaigns, billboards, print, radio and television advertising. We've even helped fund a food trailer with brilliant Rotary images and messages!
Clubs must be willing to invest a minimum of $500 and, in exchange, the District will provide $750 (minimum) match to help fund your campaign. Because we are committed to spending the full budget amount, the District match can be significantly higher.
Tell your Rotary story in your community. Details and required forms are available at the Public Image District Grant page at our website. Deadline for submitting applications is August 29, 2014.

Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a unique program focused on developing current/future Rotary leaders. The program is so highly regarded that we budgeted $2500 for buy-one-get-one scholarships. This is a real simple program:
- If a club will send one person to an RLI session the District will pay the registration for a second person to go (same session to make it easy on the book keeping)
- Once a club has a plan, call Kathy Hegedus to expedite the registration and payment process.
Please note this offer is good for Rotaract clubs too.
How easy is that!! I hope we spend the whole $2500 this summer! It is a great program and every club's leadership development program will be enhanced by sending 2 or more Rotarians to this great training. It is good for new Rotarians, new committee chairs and new Board Members. I hope nobody leaves this money on the table!!
