Anne and I are enjoying our third Rotary International Convention, this time in Bangkok. The weather and traffic are challenges but, subject to external effects, the organisation is amazing.The impact centre is about 20 km from the centre of the city, and accessible in the mornings in a little over half an hour using one of 20 different nominated bus routes. Getting home is different with our longest journey just over two and a half hours for the same distance! The centre is new and has well over 100,000 square metres of convention and exhibition space.  Click to view slideshow.The 2012 RI Convention in Bangkok, Thailand, has drawn to a close. But the event is still leaving a big smile on many people’s faces. On 7 May, exactly 2,012 participants put on yellow and blue jackets and hoods to form Thailand’s Biggest Smile at the Impact Arena for Ripley’s Believe It Or Not. The number 2012 reflected the convention year and the year Rotary members celebrated exceeding Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge for polio eradication. Read more about the celebration. The activity also fit in with the RI Convention concept of “The Land of a Thousand Smiles” which conveyed the friendliness of the host country and its people. The event received major media coverage in the Thailand area and beyond. The District Guest Speaker Bank has been updated and now includes a past Rotary Group Study Exchange member who is happy to speak to our Rotary clubs. He is employed by the Geological Survey of NSW and is a principal research scientist and palaeontologist. He can speak on palaeontology and how fossils can be used to reconstruct the arrangement of continents on the planet 400-500 years ago; geology particularly of Australia and New Zealand and geological heritage and preservation of geodiversity.
Another includes an Angel Flight pilot from our own district!

 The Leadership Institute program was developed to not only improve Rotary knowledge and leadership skills, but also to ensure an up to date uniform program. It has been running for 20 years and creates growth in membership in districts where this has been fully implemented. This growth has been due to more effective and vibrant clubs.
