Youth Programming and Scholarships
|
We view young leaders in our community not just as the future, but as valued collaborators in vocational and community service, promoting goodwill and understanding, and in building networks to help others in need. Our club supports a number of different programs that are centered on youth leadership. For 2013 we will be offering four $500 scholarships to Sharon senior high school students. You can learn more about the deadlines and application process by clicking the link to the left (the application is there as well).
Rotary District 7950 is hosting its Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Seminar this April 19th -21st. RYLA is an amazing opportunity for young leaders to come together with others from all over Massachusetts and Rhode Island to work on leadership skills and have fun. Our club has committed to sending a number of high school sophomores and juniors this year. You can learn more about RYLA by clicking on the link to the left where you can find additional links to sites that explain the program, and where you can find the RYLA Application that needs to be completed by March 15th, 2013.

We are very proud to be sponsors of Sharon High School’s Interact Club. Our young Interact leaders have been very active in the Sharon Community as well as in international projects such as their support for the Nepal Orphan’s Home and for ShelterBox disaster aid. Each year, Interact must complete at least one community service project and an project that furthers cultural and international understanding. We will be launching an additional set of web pages for Sharon High School Interact shortly.

Lastly, Rotary offers two international youth exchange programs for young people in our community. The first, our long-term youth exchange program, is for students aged 15-18.5 who are willing to spend a year abroad as part of a study program where they will stay with local families, learn the language and local customs and have an experience of a lifetime. We will be promoting this program strongly later in the spring of 2012 with a November 15th deadline for students interested in heading out in the 2013-14 school years. Our second program is a short term youth exchange program that is a family-to-family exchange program that will occur over the upcoming summer months. Open to students aged 15-18.5, students will spend 3-4 weeks overseas and then will return home to host their foreign host-brother/sister for the same amount of time. This is a great chance to spend time overseas, to get a taste of what it is like to live in another culture and tackle a new language. You can learn more about these programs by clicking here.
