Todays Meeting May 14, 2013 by Curell, John
"We are this Close"
President Darris opened the meeting at 12:18(he's excused we were waiting for guests to arrive. Good job Pres.) and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of our National Anthem. Present were Rotarians: Ryan, Paul, John G, John C, Wally, Herb, Mark, Jim, guests Kathy Szajna (third visit) Jim Allen, Ryley Taylor, Christie Taylor and guest Rotarian Phil Groh of Mt. Clemens. Wally gave the invocation with a special prayer for the ill, homeless and those out of work.
We appreciate Paul representing us at the District Assembly. He said much was devoted to the application for District and Global Grants. He will give a more in depth report later. Thanks Paul.
John asked that Ron Sy be accepted as our representative to the Macomb Rotary Foundation. Seconded by Herb. Motion passed. His name will be forwarded as our representative by John C.
Herb updated us on the aution. He said to go on line and view the items and bie when it opens on May 17th.
Ron announced we made about $1,019 at Santino's, not as good as Snookers but it was Santino's first night. Our next scheduled night at Santino's is June 29 - July 2. The schedule is already out and filled.
Herb booked the bus trip to see the play "Ernie" for thirty people. This will be for Jun 20, 2013 for $70.00 each, to include the play, the bus cost, and dinner at Sinbads. Be sure to put it on your calendar and invite whom you might want to go. Herb was asking how many tickets each one would want before he opens up to the public. It's a great deal for a great night out.
The golf outing is progressing well. People need to look in the envelopes (packets) Herb gave to everyone. In there is all you need to sell hole sponsorships and golf tickets. Our profit is in the hole sponsorships and we need to increase the number from last year when we were down. Try your doctors, I did and sold two so far. Your favorite restaurant is also a good bet, if not a hole sponsor at least a gift certificate. WE NEED THEM NOW! Charity is not just a Tuesday lunch thing we need to work at it all week.
We need parent sponsors for an exchange student from Brazil who hasn't been placed as yet. If you know of someone let Darris know. They need not be Rotarians but will need to agree to have a background check done.
Darris announced the BBQ installation party for the incoming DG Jim Gilmore will be 3:00-6:00 PM at Waldon Woods Recreation Area June 2, 2013. Cost $35.00. His official visit to our club for the next Rotary year is scheduled for Jul 9, 2013.
The old Sergeant Darris decided to query us on knowledge in last weeks bulletin. He charged us even if the answer was right! How fair is that? It was good to see that at least some read it.
The next golf outing planning meeting scheduled at noon at John Lembke's on May 17th. All are invited who want to help.
Next Board meeting is June 4, 2013 at 9:00 A.M. at Savory Grill.

Eileen gave us a great update on her involvement in bringing clean water to parts of the world which do not presently have the luxury we take for granted every day. Eileen briefed us on the work she and her husband started in Nepal and some mistakes make even with the best thought out plans. That people on the receiving end must be involved in the planning and follow on education for a viable continuation of clean water for them. She told how just a simple thing like what the sand filters are made of (plastic versus ceramic) can make a big difference in acceptance by a culture. We think plastic is more durable, they think ceramic is more conducive to their economy!
She talked about the water project education classes going on at Columbieaire, "Getting It Right", how it is being spread world wide and the inclusion of training to forgo some of the mistakes made in previous projects as exampled previously. She was not asking for money at this time, but a club could sponsor someone to come and take the classes, not just Rotarians, but anyone

John C won the card draw, but drew the 9 of diamonds.
(pot wasn't big enough)
NEW GAME has begun, and is progressing well! The pot is building for me. $43.00 today. Over $50 next week it looks like. Bring money!
50/50 Raffle won by our new incoming ADG Joe Bauman. Glad to have you Joe, but let's not make it a habit of winning!

I'm leaving John's face here so we can remember him. See you in the fall John! Good Luck at Market, stay away from those beautiful widows!
Talk to someone about Rotary this week! Then invite them to lunch in two weeks, Let's build on the good thing we have! Use the speaker list to plan your guests in advance. Next week is a talk on Indian jewelry history. Another great program for guests.
It was a special treat to have our ADG Eileen Heasly back and a double treat to have her speak on Water Projects and her very educational and inspiring experiences.
| Next Weeks Speaker: by Curell, John
Indian jewelry is next week's subject which I'm sure will be extremely interesting. It will be a good time for you guys to bring your wives and you gals to bring your girlfriends (or husbands)and learn about Indian jewelry history from Leon Locklear.
knowing the speaker in advance doesn't do any good if you don't use it as a guide for inviting guests to the club.
What a great opportunity to show your friends one of the super things our Rotary Club does to inform and educate our members.
Get out there and advertise our speakers, our programs, and the GREAT work we do.
