October 2011

Hello Smithtown Sunrise !

Almost three months down and I still have my voice, you sure are a noisy bunch.  I may be losing my sanity a bit if you haven't been able to tell but I still have the energy, drive and strong love for the club to make this a fantastic Rotary year and we are well under way. I am so encouraged about what our Little Italy event is shaping up to be.  I thought it would be a relatively small affair (75 people), modest earnings and big on fun. What we are going to have is a huge event (150 people), huge earnings and big on fun (that hasn't changed and never will!).  So much wheeling and dealing went on at John Zollo's summer bash that this event became bigger than life and garnered the excitement and team spirit of so many.  It is that spirit that makes a club great and its initiatives fantastic for all involved. I continue to revel in the greatness that is our club!  Ed Wehrheim along with many of the town officials generously booked the Dedications for the event and he and Vinny Puleo have already been actively promoting attendance.  Bart Dali is doing a fantastic job ensuring we have a super successful Chinese auction by taking the lead in its coordination and Dolores ,aka, Dee has been able to ascertain several gift cards from our local restaurants already- super job and fantastic leadership - everybody all aboard!   As a reminder each gift basket should be valued at $50.  If you happen to get donations smaller in size that's quite alright we will mix and match to make a beautiful basket. Thank you to Adrienne for being the point person at the Elks and for all the terrific work she does arranging the venues.  As a reminder Little Italy is November 4th from 7 to 12 AM at The Elks Lodge in Smithtown.  Please make sure you send some invites to your closest friends and relatives to ensure a good turnout and get ready to dance, dance, dance!

I am so glad I found that Duckie so we can get some dance practice in before November 4th.  For those of you that missed the introduction of  Duckie he is our new sound system for the club.  Admittedly my excitement overtook me but I just love the Duckie and my ability to dance around the room!

So we already have one healthy round of Rotary Jeopardy under our belt, I cannot promise there will not be a round two.  Come on admit it, it was fun...a little fun?  In lieu of another round my daughter and I have been toying with a dance act to put on for you...How Fun is That?!#$%&* I always wanted to be on dancing with the Stars - And since i consider you all STARS, I will consider the Millennium Diner my stage. Don't laugh, I'm serious.

Let's continue to keep Carol in our thoughts and prayers and hope for a speedy recovery. I miss her vibrance already and hope she is able to rejoin us soon!

The same thoughts and prayers go out to her boyfriend!

Happy September Birthdays to:

Andrew Ratway Sept. 2

Pete Famularo Sept. 9

Ben Piskorz Sept. 11

Cara Every-Calderon Sept. 30

Coming in October we have the one and only:

Terry Wolf (10/14) Secretary Extraordinaire.

Happy Birthday girlfriend!

Until next time -

Enjoy Life, Feel and be Fantastic.

The Rotary Club of Smithtown Sunrise Donate to the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry
by Walsh, Carol

Hi All,

I was at the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry this morning and gave Pat Westlake our check for $2,250.00. They were so appreciative. Pat had just picked up $1300.00 worth of food from Stop & Shop. She said that our check was going to cover that purchase. (We are standing amongst the food in the attached picture.) The food pantry has increasing demands for it's services.

The food pantry has requests for 130 Thanksgiving food baskets. Right now they have 20 turkeys and the Smithtown Club is donating 35 turkeys. Pat is relatively confident that the remaining turkeys will arrive. In Pat's words, when I called to say that I'd drop off the check today, "The miracles are starting to happen." I also gave her about $200.00 in food gift cards, $135 via Gabbie who collected from Willow Ridge as well as $50.00 in cash and two other gift cards via Vinnie Puleo.

Adrienne met with Otis today and gave him our check for $1,250.00 (if I'm remembering the dollar amount correctly) which he will give to the Islip Civic Council for their food pantry.

We can all be proud that we were able to help so many people.

Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving.

             631-265-5669

●    A Donation was sent to Olympian Maria Michta who lost her belongings due to a lightning strike at her home in Nesconsett.

●    GOL fundraiser...Car Wash ...change of venue.

●    Pick Date for Italian Night (Will be either 11/9 or 11/10) Ed is looking into possible locations for the dinner.

●    Date for Snow Ball is 2/23/13.

●    Who Will we Honor at the Snow Ball? Ed and Vinnie are vetting possible recipients.

●    Wear Your Rotary Pins!!

●    We will NOT be serving dinner at Camp Pa Qua Tuck because there are no more dates available.

●    The tax exempt number is still in process.

Regular Meeting August 2, 2012

●    I read Rotary’s Wheel Emblem from the ABCs of Rotary p. 4.

●    We received a thank you letter from Camp Pa Qua Tuck for the $785 donation to help sponsor Theodore, a 7 year old boy who will attend the camp from August 2-7.

●    The magnetic lapel pins will be delivered later today.

●    It was suggested that the month of September be Bring A Friend to Rotary Month. Will be discussed at next meeting.

●    Looking into the possibility of doing a group fund raiser for GOL with the other 5 Rotary Clubs in the Assistant District Governor’s (Gabbie’s) Sector.

●    There is a Doo Wop Car Show at the Smithtown Historical Society property on Saturday August 4th from 10AM to 4 PM. It is a charity function supporting stroke awareness and prevention. There will be free blood pressure screenings and stroke awareness and prevention information. It is featuring Doo Wop music & live bands, classic cars, vendor crafts, hot dogs, burgers, hot & cold beverages, ice cream and more! Admission is a $5.00 donation per car where 100% goes towards stroke awareness and prevention. For more information visit www.judysrun.com.

●    Tuesday 7-31 was the last of the 4 Smithtown Community Band Concerts. I spoke to the audience for a few minutes prior to the concert to answer the question “What is Rotary?”. We collected 6 large bags of food which I dropped off at the Food Pantry on Wednesday morning.

●    Pat Carley, (scheduled speaker) could not attend today’s meeting.

●    In lieu of a speaker I asked members to explain how they describe Rotary to a prospective member. We had really good interaction amongst our members. The subject then morphed into the telling of how some of us became Rotarians. This was very interesting and I think we’ll do it again when attendance is more complete. (A lot of people are enjoying summer  vacation.)

SELECTED NEWS STORY

Thank you to the Rotary Club of Smithtown...

Recently the Rotary Club of Smithtown made a very generous donation to the students at Park View Elementary School in the form of books.  The books, which will be housed and put into circulation in the schools' library were chosen to assist teachers and their students with the new Common Core Standards.  We are so thankful to the Rotary Club of Smithtown for their continued philanthropy to our schools in Kings Park.

Smithtown Sunrise in the Morning
by Stare, Steve

Thanks to Harlan Fischer of the Smithtown Rotary,
The Rotary Club of Smithtown Sunrise
has it's own theme song:

Sung to the tune of Carolina in the Morning.

Nothing can be finer that to meet here at the diner---Thursday mor-or-ning.

At our meeting we'll have breakfast, and we'll drink some coffee--Thursday mor-or-ning.

Start your day with service.

Rotary's main purpose

Make new friends that last for years.

Smithtown Sunrise really cares.

We will hang our banner: we'll display our perfect manners--Thursday mor-or-ning.

So welcome to our meeting, hope you like our vocal greeting sung this mor-or-ning .
