BASEF - Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair
by Crossman, Paul

As Voluntold a few weeks ago, I attended the BASEF yesterday at Hillfield  Strathallen as the HEW Rotary representative and judge.  After a full morning of reviewing all the booths I than narrowed my search to those that fell under the ‘Hamilton Area’ and chose the following award winners of the HEW Rotary awards.  I did not have much of an opportunity to interact with the students as three or four Merit Judges are given time to discuss each project with the student for 15 minutes each.  This is the important part of the judging for the students so I did not want to interfere.   These were exceptional displays of young minds at work.  The results are not announced until Saturday so “Mums the Word.”  I was a little disappointed with the turn out of the public schools in the Hamilton District compared to the Catholic and private schools.  What was really interesting was the Mentoring program between MacMaster and Barton Secondary.

Hamilton East Wentworth Rotary Awards Presented to:

Third Place: Cassandra Middleton     HWCD   St. David

Second Place: Roberto Ceron  HWDSB Barton

First Place: Kazi Akther & Rugiya HWDSB Sir John A. Macdonald

Thank You for the opportunity to attend on the clubs behalf.

Hamilton Ti-Cats Update on the Club and The Community.
by Reiding, John

Ron introduced Dave Watkins, Public Relations Officer for the Hamilton TiCat CFL Football organization.  In his introduction Ron mentioned the fact that the image of Hamilton to Canadians is twofold, 1. Steel town and 2. Ti-Cats, indicating the importance to Hamilton’s image of the Ti-Cat club.

Dave’s talk included his experiences working many years with the Toronto Argonaut’s CFL Club’s management and now with the Ti-Cat o rganization. 2013 will be a challenging year for the club; a new head coach, home games at the University of Guelph football stadium, winning the 2013 Grey-Cub and switching over to the new Hamilton Pan-Am stadium in 2015. Reception from the city of Guelph officials, the University and the press has been very positive and warm. Although the 2013 schedule is not known yet, much work and organizational work for the Guelph facility is ongoing. Major ones are allocations and signage of the seats, parking etc. To facilitate attendance for Hamilton and area fans, it is planned to provide comfortable highway style busses from areas parking lots in Hamilton and area. Much of the talk centered on the new Hamilton stadium features, ways and means to retain present fan’s loyalty and attracting new fans. Although the seating is reduced from the Ivor Wynn facility, the addition of corporate boxes and other changes will keep paid ticket seats at present levels. The new stadium will not only physically turned, but technology services planned will be the most modern ones of any stadium. Wi-Fi feed to personal apps and many features should be an initiative for fans to leave their comfortable couch, HD TV and head for the stands. Food and drink availability will be much expanded from the traditional hot dogs and coke and will be expanded to include many specialty foods. The stands will be pitched differently from the old facility, bringing the seats closer to the field, at the same time providing increased space on the field sites for the player’s safety. Plans to resolve parking is already underway. Providing remote parking lots and shuttle services from these to the stadium are under consideration. Bob Young is providing $37 million in funds to add many features required to meet CFL standards. Other benefits to the community anticipated are; improved revenue to the City and expansion of school programs to promote football and to encourage more healthy life styles by students. After fielding many questions, Andre thanked the speaker for his time and updates.

Hamiltons Of The World
by Crossman, Paul

-The Story of Hamiltons Across Five Continents

The Genesis of The Idea was to create a fresh approach for Rotary fundraising.

The inspiration for a book about "Hamiltons of the World" came about because Hamilton East Rotary Club needed a major fundraiser and I felt there had to be a way of utilising the other Hamilton Rotary Clubs around the world, especially as Hamilton, New Zealand is about to celebrate the 150th anniversary of its formation and current name.  http://www.hamiltonsoftheworld.com/book/ Tim Brooker

Ron Schmuck has a supply of the Rotary Inspired "Hamilton's of the World" books available. Several business people are obtaining the books for business gifts. Anyone requiring copies, please contact or see him. All commissions earned, benefit our Community service fund.
