President's Corner May 15th, 2013

     In 1939, William Watt was the President of the Thomasville Rotary Club and attended the International Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. The clouds of war were gathering and most of the speeches centered on the role that Rotary would play if war should come.

     A couple of the speeches particularly appealed to William Watt. One involved how soldiers on each side in Europe wanted to know what the other side thought of them. They also expressed desires to have friendship despite the fact that it wasn’t long before they became enemies.

     In 1943 William Watt was a District Governor and visited 55 Rotary clubs in Georgia. Many wanted to know what could be done to promote peace and make wars less possible. After the war, it became apparent that many of the colleges in Europe were either destroyed or overcrowded.

     In 1946 the Thomasville Club submitted a resolution to District 165 which included the whole state of Georgia. The resolution passed and the scholarships for the Georgia Rotary Student Program began for 4 students in the fall of 1946. Since the inception, over 2,700 young men and women have been brought to campuses in Georgia by Rotarians,
