Support for Kenyan Schoolchildren
by Gerald G. Kallman

In September the Rotary Club of Ridgewood determined to support the Nkoilale Primary School in the Masai Mara Reserve of western Kenya.  Our modest beginnings will provide hot nutritious lunches for the school's 360 pupils in Grades 1-8.  This letter announces the arrival of our first semester support.

To: Jelly Kallman President and all the Rotarians of Ridgewood Rotary Club.
 Dear Mr. Kallman,
We, the Nkoilale Primary pupils, teachers, the Chairman and the school Committee give our most sincere gratitude's for your support in providing food to Nkoilale Primary school pupils.
We wish to inform you that the food was received with great joy not only by the pupils but by the whole community. Most of the times, the children could not understand anything in the afternoon due to hunger but not any more.
The teachers have had a difficult time teaching but now we are looking forward to producing the best candidates this year. Most of the kids here usually have only one meal each day in their homes and that is dinner. They do not eat anything in the morning neither lunch. But now they will be having two meals in a day. We can't thank you enough for your support on this.
Again we have been having cases of children missing school without a good reason now the school attendance has gone up. No child want to miss school as they know there will be food.  Know that you have touched these kids' hearts and cant thank you enough. We do not know what to say or do so that you know for sure how our hearts feel.  We are delighted to be associated with you and your Club. Let all those who sacrificed know that we really appreciate what they have done for us and will continue doing for us. Let them know that they will be always in our hearts and will be praying for them. We will never be able to repay them but they have planted a seed of love that will never die.
We received 5 bags of beans, four bags of rice and 17 kg of cooking oil last month (September) totaling to Kshs.28,500.00 USD.452. Come 18th this month Mercy again promise to deliver another 5 bags of beans, four bags of rice and 17 kg of cooking oil which will take us to the end of October 2007. This food serves 400 pupils. Once again thank you very much for all your support and we look forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
On behalf of Nkoilale pupils, teacher and community
John, the School Chairman

Rotary Club of Ridgewood Distributes Funds
by Shetler, Michael

More than two dozen local and international agencies and charities are the beneficiaries of donations announced this week by the Rotary Club of Ridgewood.

More than two dozen local and international agencies and charities are the beneficiaries of donations announced this week by the Rotary Club of Ridgewood.  A total of more than $25,000 will be distributed to organizations serving Glen Rock, Hohokus and Ridgewood, the communities represented by the service club.
According to out-going president, Jerry Kallman, contributions locally were directed to health agencies, Boy and Girl Scout councils, the YMCA and YWCA, the Red Cross, West Bergen Mental Healthcare and other social service providers and educational institutions. Scholarships to graduating seniors residing in the municipalities served by the club also made up part of the annual contributions. Ridgewood Wildscapes, the Fisher Foundation assisting the families of wounded servicemen and women, and the Kishermoruak Primary School in the Maasi Mara Reserve of Kenya, East Africa, were new additions to the club's list of charities.
Kallman said the monies being distributed came from several fund-raisers held during the club year, ended on June 30. They included the annual Pancake Breakfast held each year on the Saturday following Thanksgiving and the Beefsteak Dinner and Auction, held in June. The latter, held on June 9th and spearheaded by incoming president, Jeanine Soderlund, broke all previous earnings records, Kallman added.
