Meeting Minutes September 19, 2012
by John M Thompson

Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary
Minutes
September 19th, 2012

Present:
Dave                Myrna              Donn               Charlie
Colleen            Han                 Narada                        Jim
Paul                 Mike

Many thanks to Mike for organizing the wine pairing social last Sunday, which was enjoyed by everyone.   There was further discussion about how to follow up with guests and prospective members who joined us for the event.   Lester, Membership Chair, should contact those guests with calls or letters inviting them to an upcoming meeting.  It was suggested that the October 3rd meeting would be a good time to invite guests as Lisa will be presenting her trip to Haiti.  The club agreed that we should also begin planning more social events like this so we have opportunities to invite guests.

Club members were urged to search out the Meetup.com site on the internet just to see how it works.  This is the site that the Rotoractors are using to attract new members to their club.  The name they have chosen for their club is Silicon Valley West.  Perhaps this site could be of use to us, also.

Tomorrow is Club Day at Fremont H.S.  Colleen will pick up the popcorn machine today and Myrna will be on  hand at the school tomorrow.

Update on Crabfeed from Dave and Paul, who met with Lions club members, Jim Gould and Al Knox last night.  Tickets will be available October 12th.  Prior to that date, our club needs to estimate how many tickets to the first seating they will need.  In the same way, the Lions will establish an estimate for the second seating.  By mid-December all unsold tickets will be returned and handled by their respective clubs, Lions 1st seating and Rotary 2nd seating.  A ticket is not sold until there is money in-hand!  Seating will be handled, once again, by Myrna.

Speaker today was Dave explaining the Foundation giving.  November is Foundation Month.  The expectation within this District is that each member will be a Double Sustainer, requiring a donation of $200.  All of our members were double sustainers last year.  Handouts were provided to explaining Foundation Funding.  Our club received $1,556 in DDF for the current year.

Dave distributed the Foundation's request for annual donations and raffle tickets.  Please return pledge cards and/or money to Dave by the November 7th meeting.  Remember that it is the goal of this club to be 100% double sustainers, if at all possible.  He also provided a brief
Polio Plus report:  4 countries continue to report incidents of polio.

Crabfeed tickets for the first seating are now SOLD OUT!  We need to start selling those second seating tickets now.

Paul reported on a meeting with Fremont H.S.  Although grants have been awarded to create a sustainable garden at the high school, the District has decided not to allow the project to proceed on the land originally promised.  They will suggest another site.  This is a great disappointment to both the Cupertino and Sunnyvale Sunrise Rotary Clubs.  Paul will pursue this further with those at the District to better understand what the difficulty is.

Jim opened a conversation about the cost of the Wild Palms site and breakfast.  The $35 we now pay in monthly dues does cover the room and general costs of the club.  However, meals are additional.  Please consider this before a full discussion at next week's meeting.

Jim thanked everyone for their help at the Poker Tournament on Saturday night.
There were 19 players and the tournament netted $1,375.

Also, Mike thanked those who participated with Cupertino Rotary on a Rebuilding Together Project on Saturday morning.  Pictures of the project have been e-mailed to the club.

Those who attended the Avenues of Service had a good evening.  Emil and Mike attended a session on attracting younger members.  They felt that there is a need for our club to be more active in using social media, i.e., Tweet, to reach a younger audience.

Justin reported on Fremont H.S. Interact:
Dance, November 9th, Quinlan Center, 6-10:00.  Our club will provide chaperones.
RYLA - Interviews will begin after Thanksgiving and students attending will then be expected to actively participate in the club through the spring semester before going to camp.

In an effort to support literacy, the Interactors will be tutoring after school at San Miguel elementary school.

Rotary has a Yellow Pages directory for businesses.  Check it out online and add your business.

Hurricane Sandy donations are being collected through the District Website.  Please donate online.

Foundation giving continues, now at $4,425.

Paul will bring a proposal to the club next week for additional funds for the Rebuilding Together Project that our members participated in last month.  There was a cost overrun on this project of $2,500.

Narada reported on Roland's Memorial Project in Sri Lanka.  It would be easier to move ahead on this project before June 2013 when all Districts change over to the new financial program.  The current rules would allow our club to create an International Project for $15,000 and receive matching funds.  That money will be used to build new libraries at a cost of $500-600 each. There is currently $11,700 available, so the club would need to come up with $3,300 more to receive the matching funds.

Crabfeed Reminder!!  First seating is sold out.  However, any tickets not paid for in full by December 15th will be returned.  Please keep working on auction and raffle prizes.

Next week the District Governor will visit our club.  The club will donate $100 for receiving blankets to be donated to Valley Med at that time.

Speaker:  Rhonda Pryor from NOVA in Sunnyvale.

Emil

Reminder:  Dark next week!  Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

Lisa and Donn have suggested gifts and/or an event to thank the employees of West Palms Hotel for their support of our move to their hotel.  We have also given gifts or a donation to Live Oak Adult Day Services each year at Christmas.  Please think about how what you would like to do this year so we can discuss this at the next meeting.

Date and place for Holiday Party?

Lisa had a request from Rotary in Port au Prince, Haiti for funding for new shelters.  Temporary shelters following the 2010 devastation have broken down and need to be replaced.  International committee can consider this request.

Narada reported that the paperwork for the projects in Ghana and Sri Lanka was completed and went to the Board.  Joe Hamilton was able to respond for the Board on the progress of these requests.  The money was released with approval for the projects.  Our club needs to write a resolution of how the money will be used and send it to the District Foundation.  Then, we need to send a check to each place.  A copy of each check should be sent to the District Treasurer, Mary Humphrey.  It is the Board's understanding that our club will not be initiating any grants, but will be donating to grants initiated through the other clubs.

Thank you from Myrna to Mike and Dave for withstanding 3 hours of loud music and 400 teenagers on Friday night when they chaperoned the Interactors dance at Quinlan Center!!

Paul will be hosting a Crab Feed meeting at his office tonight.  Anyone interested is welcome to attend.

Speaker was our District Governor, Joe Hamilton, speaking on the upcoming District Conference and the Rotary Vision for this year of "Peace through Service."  He also recognized all those who have contributed to the Foundation this year.
Annual Crabfeed
by Thompson, John M

Thanks to all who attended and who volunteered to make this a very successful event
