Rotary District 7610 Partners with Washington Nationals
By Vance Zavela
Rotary District 7610 has successfully forged a partnership with the Washington Nationals for the 2012 season.
Rotarians enjoy fellowship at the Nationals Stadium!
First, there will be a third End Polio Now Night on Saturday, August 18. The Nationals will be playing the New York Mets, with game time at 7:05 p.m. and a post-game concert with 90s alternative rock band Third Eye Blind. Clubs will have one opportunity to purchase tickets directly through the district's Washington Nationals contact, Megan Holeman, and avoid most service fees (except shipping).
Individual Rotarians can purchase online using the following link: http://www.nationals.com/endpolio (service fees apply). The past two End Polio Now Nights have attracted over 1,500 Rotarians, families, friends and others. However, this season the partnership has grown to a new level. Rotary has now been included in the Nationals discount coupon program. Rotarians and non-Rotarians can purchase tickets to any Nationals game (except Phillies and Yankees) during the 2012 season and not only receive a lower ticket price, but also make a contribution of $5 per ticket to The Rotary Foundation for PolioPlus.
A person can go to www.nationals.com/ tickets, select a particular game by clicking the green box for tickets, and then enter the coupon code ENDPOLIO (all caps and no space) to receive discounts in certain sections of Nationals Park, including the Infield Club level. This program is only offered online so members will be subject to service and handling fees.

Rotary - UN Day 2011 by Anderson, Peter
Crystal City Pentagon Rotary Club Members attend Rotary UN conference at UN HQ in New York City on 5 November 2011.
The weekend of 5 November 2011 was a momentus occasion for 8 CCPR Club members as they journeyed to New York City to participate in the annual Rotary - UN conference.
Six of the eight club members attending arrived on Friday 4 November to spend the day sightseeing. They were able to expand their Rotary weekend to include having a great dinner at Johnnie and Frankie's Steakhouse with the Suriname Ambassador to the UN, and discuss the club's clean water projects in Suriname. After dinner members of the club went to see the plays "Jersey Boys" and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."
On Saturday the final two members joined everyone at 8:00 AM to attend the conference. The conference was held in the General Assembly of the UN HQ. It was a sell out crowd with over 750 Rotarians, Rotoract and Interact members participating from around the world. Many people to include Rotarians do not realize the partnership between Rotary International and the UN extends well beyond Polio Plus. RI has a representative at the UN to help coordinate its many projects and also a representative to teh Organization of American States (OAS). This year's conference included UN dignitaries form the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the UN Foundation and Better World Fund and the Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information.
This event has become an annual club must attend event. Hope to see even more club members there next year.
Crystal City Pentagon Club returns to the Rainforest by Settle, Tracy
Members of the Crystal City Pentagon (CCP) Rotary Club recently returned to their adopted village of Ricanaumoffo (Rica) in northeast Suriname to continue the club’s sustainable project development in close coordination with the US Peace Corps.
Crystal City Pentagon Club returns to the Rainforest
by Rotarian Tracy L. Settle
On 27 January, Rotarians Sandy Harter, Club Vice President, and Tracy Settle, Project Leader, traveled to the Suriname capital of Paramaribo, via Trinidad and Tobago, to meet with local Rotarians and prepare for a 3 day joint US –Suriname community development trip into the interior.
Members of the Crystal City Pentagon (CCP) Rotary Club recently returned to their adopted village of Ricanaumoffo (Rica) in northeast Suriname to continue the club’s sustainable project development in close coordination with the US Peace Corps. They were hosted by Rotarians Arleen Emanuels and Marvin von Lierop, close friends of Tracy’s for the past 6 years. While the overall plan was to conduct visits to 3 villages accompanied by local representatives from UNICEF and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the trip quickly expanded to 6 villages with 10 personnel ‘in tow’, including 6 Peace Corp Volunteers (PCVs). Villages were reached by numerous boat and road conveyances, with heavy rains in the area contributing to several ‘on the edge of your seat’ excursions in and out of extremely remote locations.
In the village of Rica, the primary location for CCP’s projects, Rotarian Sandy and Tracy met over the course of 2 days with the village ‘Kapitan’ and governing council to discuss ongoing and future water, sanitation and agricultural projects. The club’s current ongoing project is to establish a community childcare facility which will provide a clean, quality staffed, educational environment for local children during the day while their parents tend to their crops on the river. While the project presently focuses on structure improvements and equipment provisions, follow-on actions including certification and training of the staff, establishment of user fees and staff payment options, recurring costs of maintenance, and collection of educational materials, will be facilitated by the PCVs. CCP, in coordination with the PCVs who have successfully garnered local organizational support including the US Embassy, is working with its partner Interact Clubs at Gunston MS and Wakefield HS to assist with fund-raising and educational material collection for the school. Additional financial support is being provided by the Bull Run Club and a District Simplified Grant. UNICEF and UNDP are working to enhance Rica community sanitation systems and agricultural development programs in coordination with community leaders and citizens, which compliment the efforts of Rotary in the village. The highlight of the visit to Rica included Rotarian Sandy crafting a most flavorsome, fiery portion of his native New Orleans Jambalaya for the entire team, resulting in raving reviews by all. Successive days had the group visiting villages along the Cottica River and investigating additional opportunities for program engagement, particularly in the villages of Wanhatti and Arowarte. Both villages are being considered for water projects ($6,000) with fund-raising opportunities available for other clubs in District 7610 to support these efforts.
Returning to Paramaribo after the 3 day excursion, Rotarians Sandy and Tracy de-briefed the Residence Inn Rotary Club on the projects, met with US Ambassador John Nay and Director of the Peace Corps George Like to discuss future Rotary engagement opportunities in Suriname, and were hosted at a dinner by the Deputy Charge of Mission, Margaret McKean, with several prominent Suriname business and education leaders. The projects in Suriname are examples of how Rotary can successfully leverage participation of similarly focused, local profit and non-profit organizations to support sustainable capacity development in maturing communities. Were it not for Rotary initiatives in villages like Rica, governments and corporate philanthropic organizations would see little reason to provide for the basic water, sanitation, and economic needs of communities less fortunate for years to come. These small projects send a huge positive signal to country leaders to engage and show the world that Rotary is the organization that ‘gets things done’. For more information or interest in participating with the CCP Club projects in Suriname, please email Tracy Settle at tracysettle3010@gmail.com.

Rotary Year Finish Coming Up - It is Not too Late to Donate to the Rotary Foundation by Anderson, Peter
Peter Anderson attended the Zone 33 Foundation Seminar in Raleigh, NC, 8-9 June. The seminar descibed the move to Rotary's New Generations requirements that will affect all clubs starting in Rotary Year 2013-2014.
There is preparation that will need to be accomplished prior to 1 July 2013 by all clubs desiring Rotary Foundation Grants. In particular every club will be required to have at least one member trained and certified in the new grant process.
Also a reminder that if you have not donated to the Rotary Foundation it is not too late to donate and receive credit as a Sustaining Member for Rotary Year 2011-2012 or to become a Paul Harris Fellow. Donations can be made either through the club's Rotary Foundation Chair,Joe Garland, or directly to Rotary International via their web site.
Introducing a project called “Katrianna walks...So they don't have to” by Garner, Archie
Katrianna, daughter of Rotarian Katherine Van Diest, introduced the CCP Rotary Club to her project called “Katrianna walks...So they don't have to”. Her project is a program being channeled through the Rotary Global Water Team.
She, and her project partners, are hoping to involve interact clubs, Rotarians and the general public in the mission of building water wells around the world.
The concept is simple, sponsor a Jerry Jug, which consists of making a $100 contribution to the Paul Harris program; the contribution counts toward the sponsoring member’s personal Rotary Foundation goal. Then place the jug, with the sponsoring member’s Rotary Club logo on it, in the home, office, other businesses, or public places where people will see the rotary message and, hopefully, donate into the jug. When the jug is filled with donations, return the jug to a “Katrianna walks” member or to the club treasurer.
The Rotary Clubs can use the funds collected for their own water projects or to support a club in the district that has its own water project. There is also a list of clubs with open projects looking for partners found at www.rotaryglobalrun4water.com .
“Katrianna walks....so they don't have to” was founded to provide local water to millions of people who still walk long distances to get and carry water back each day.

The Crystal City Pentagon Rotary Club inducted Ms. Melinda Purvis, the owner of Self Storage Plus at 605 South Ball Street, in Arlington as a Paul Harris Fellow at their meeting on 8 September 2010. For the past two years, Ms. Purvis has been instrumental in helping the Crystal City Pentagon Club accomplish its quarterly Passageways Project furnishing apartments for homeless people transitioning back into mainstream society.
The Crystal City Pentagon Club met Ms. Purvis through its membership in the Arlington Chamber of Commerce.Until that time the club had no place to store donated furniture for its Passageway Project making it very difficult to obtain and maintain the needed furniture. In 2009 the three Arlington Rotary Clubs, Crystal City Pentagon, Arlington and Fort Myer-Rosslyn joined the Arlington Chamber of Commerce under a joint membership. The Club met Ms. Purvis there and she has supported the Passageways Project with reduced storage rates, to include waiving storage fees for up to six months at a time. She has also alerted the Club to furniture that her customers have either left behind or did not want to take with them, helping the club provide the Passageways recipients with much needed furniture to make their empty apartments a home, never asking for anything in return. Her efforts have resulted in the club saving money and having more furniture to support Passageways.
The Crystal City Pentagon Club members all agreed that Ms. Purvis' selfless support to the club and community reflected Rotary's ideals and used the club's accumulated points to honor her as the club's latest Paul Harris Fellow.
