The Hazeltons exhibit sedate golfing attire at the Rotary Scholarship Golf Tournament

June 14th is the date. The 18-hole golf course in Estes Park is the place. The annual Rotary Scholarship Benefit Golf Tournament kicks off with registration at 11:30am and a shotgun start at 1:00pm.

“We need golfers,” said Bruce Carmichael, chair of the Estes Park Rotary Club’s Golf Committee. “We’d like to put at least 100 golfers on the course for an afternoon of fun and for a good cause. Just think of it as playing a round of golf for the kids because all the money we raise will go to the Rotary Foundation’s scholarship fund which helps college bound students from Estes Park meet the increasing cost of a college education.”

There are three divisions of golfers: men’s, women’s and mixed (fun) division. Prizes are awarded to the first and second place teams in each division. Anyone who shoots a hole-in-one on Hole #10 wins $10,000.  Prizes also will be awarded for the longest drive (men and women), closest tee shot to the pin on holes 2, 7, 10, and 15, and longest putt.

The entry fee is $110/individual or $400 for a team of four. The entry fee pays for green fees, golf cart, drink ticket, a goody bag loaded with stuff every golfer needs, and appetizers at the hangar Restaurant after the tournament.

“Even if you don’t play golf or even like golf, you can still participate in our tournament,” explained Carmichael. “We have the golf ball drop.”

Carmichael said you buy a numbered golf ball for $10. That ball and everybody else’s who bought one goes into a box that is opened far above a golf green. The 3 balls landing in or closest to the holes designated 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will receive 20%, 10%, and 5% of the total Golf Ball Drop entry fees respectively.

“You don’t even have to be here to win,” said Carmichael. “Buy a ball; get a chance to win a cash prize.  How much depends on how many balls are sold.”

With less a month to go before the tournament, golfers need to be signing up. Registration forms are available at the 18-Hole Pro Shop, online at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org, (click on “golf tournament”) or by calling Bruce Carmichael at 970-586-5471.

If you would like to be a sponsor of the golf tournament, there are open sponsorships ranging from $75 to $2,000 or more and they carry a number of benefits including slots for tournament players. Contact Ron Gordon at 586-0370 or Jay Harroff at 586-3838 (daytime) or 586-5458 (evenings). Information on sponsorships is also available at www.rotaryclubofestespark.org,

 Rotarian of Note

Image

The “Rotarian of Note” is a person or persons who do the tasks that help the club be successful, working often behind the scenes.

Last Thursday, May 16th, the bell rang for Ken Cole. Ken has been assisting Treasurer Longley Parker in collection of meal and room fees for club meetings for the past year. He is also involved in the success of IT’S SHOWTIME, recruiting ad sellers and managing the sale of advertisements for the show program.   For these efforts and many more, Ken Cole is “Rotarians of Note”.

New Life for 58-year old Rotary Pavilion
by Rosenbaum, Brad

New Life for 58-year old Rotary Pavilion

ImagePhase I of the Pavilion Project was completed last Friday, May 17, with Rotary volunteer power. The first coat of stain went on smoothly, thanks to several willing workers. It was completed in just under three hours on a beautiful day, according to Peter Sinnott. Phase 2, the second coat of stain, was applied on Monday.

The pavilion was built in 1955 as a Rotary Club of Estes Park project to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Rotary International, the world’s first service club. The structure is located in the Cherokee Draw Day Use area, near Highway 36 and Fourth Street in Estes Park. On April 25, the Rotary Club of Estes Park presented the Estes Valley  Recreation and Park District a check for $1,000 to help purchase supplies for the renovation.  The old pavilion will be good for another 50 years!

Faustine And Out Bound Student Lauren Go Sailing!
by Rosenbaum, Brad

Sailing

Last Sunday Rotary Member, Mark Richards, took our exchange students sailing for the first time! They went in Marks boat to Carter lake. Word has it they were a bit nervous in the beginning, but as you can see in the pictures they had a great time.

5th Thursday Social
by Rosenbaum, Brad

ImageWe would like every one to join us for a celebration of the completed renovations on the Rotary Park Shelter. The shelter is located along Hwy 34 across from the tunnel. Please bring an appetizer and beer or wine to share with everyone. Both wine and beer are permitted. We cannot reserve the shelter but I will try and be out there about 4:30. The party will officially start at 5:00 p.m. Lets make a real effort to be there and show our appreciation to those that worked on the renovations.
