The Overland Park Rotary Club is composed of business and professional people who foster and encourage service to others in the following areas: Club Service: Club Service includes activities to make the club function successfully. Such duties include scheduling weekly speakers; participating at meetings by serving as greeter, introducing visitors, giving the invocation, acting as sergeant-at-arms; serving on committees for various projects; and taking leadership roles in the club. For more information on Club Service activities or to volunteer, contact Jeff Goodman.
Vocational Service: Vocational Service is the opportunity each Rotarian has to represent his or her vocation to other members of the club. The club sponsors a Vocational Day each spring. Periodic classification talks give members a chance to describe their respective vocations to the club. To volunteer, or for more information on Vocational Service, contact Ken Bayer.
Community Service: Community Service includes a variety of activities to improve the quality of life in our community. The club raises funds for designated local charities at the annual July 4th Star Spangled Spectacular. The Youth Leadership Institute, founded by our club, is an award-winning program to encourage high school students to take an active role in their community. We raise funds for Rotary Youth Camp by selling newspapers on Kansas City Day, the Kansas City Royals home opener. Our club is also a major sponsor for the Deanna Rose Farmstead.
International Service: Rotarians undertake a variety of programs and activities to advance international understanding, goodwill and peace. International Service projects are designed to meet humanitarian needs of people in many countries. Our club has adopted a center that supports getting children off the streets in Tanzania, sent aid to Brazil for construction of housing projects, and sent donations for wheelchairs all over the world. We strongly support Polio Plus, Rotary International's highly successful program which soon will have eradicated polio worldwide.
Social Functions: In addition to the four areas of service, our club plans social events throughout the year, including the Installation Banquet in June, where new officers and Board members are installed. Other social activities include: New Member Banquet Firesides, where members meet at various homes to get better acquainted and discuss club objectives. The Spring Fling Golf Outing. Tablesides, where members and their spouses or significant others gather in small groups at various homes for pot-luck dinners. These programs are announced at meetings and in the electronic newsletter, the e-Spoke.
Programs: The Overland Park Rotary Club has become one of the most sought-after podiums in the state of Kansas. We have hosted local and state political leaders, artists, university presidents, athletes, business and industry leaders, medical experts, authors and charitable organizations. Our weekly programs aim to inform, enlighten and entertain. The high quality of guest presenters encourage our members to keep informed and stay involved. For more information or to recommend a program, contact Program Chair Doug Young at dyoung@ceresrealty.net
Public Relations: It is a priority for Rotary to do good work in our community. To that end, it is key that we publicize that work to ensure that the community is aware that Rotary is working for them. It is also important that our work is recognized by the community so service-minded individuals know that Rotary is available for them to join. We also promote our meeting location so that visitors and those interested in joining Rotary can come by. For more information contact Chad King at chad.king@spencerreed.com
Family of Rotary: It is our objective to reach out to members needing personal attention with condolences, get well wishes or congratulations due to a death, marriage or illness of the Rotarian or a member of their family. If you have any questions or know of a fellow Rotarian experiencing one of these or similar events in their life please contact Courtnay Bradley at cbradley@teamoffice.us
Requirements of Membership: Attendance at weekly meetings. Members are encouraged to attend as many weekly meetings as possible and are required to maintain at least a 60% attendance record and not to miss four or more consecutive meetings. Members may make up attendance at any other Rotary Club or by participating in various other Rotary activites. OP Rotary meetings are Monday at noon, usually at the Marriott Hotel, but occasionally at the Doubletree or the Ritz Charles when the Marriott is not available. Financial obligations: Members are assessed annual dues of $150, and there is a one-time membership processing fee of $75. Weekly lunches are billed quarterly at $14 per week. Fines of $1.00 are often assessed weekly by the Sergeant at Arms, with the proceeds contributed to the Overland Park Rotary Foundation, which funds various service projects. Projects and activities: Members are encouraged to participate in Club activities and projects, as well as area-wide, District and international activities. Members are encouraged to assume leadership roles by participating on Rotary committees, on the club's Board of Directors, or the Board of Directors of the Overland Park Rotary Foundation.
