Thanks to all the Rotarians who wrote checks to and rang bells for the Salvation Army.  Donations topped $8400, and there are still some matching funds to come in!

Congratulations to Sarah Hesmer, winner of the 2011 Kenneth Brintnall Award!  Sarah, who is the forty-first recipient of this award,  joins a select group of Marshalltown Rotarians who epitomize the qualities of leadership and service to Rotary and the community.

Thanks to Greg Slowiak, Bob McGregor, and Carrie Barr for planning this year's Holiday Party, held Tuesday evening, December 6th, in the ballroom at Elmwood.  Social hour with drinks and hors d'oeuvres was followed by a dinner of filet and shrimp.  Arlene Selby and Mindy Phomvisay provided delightful pre-dinner piano/flute music, and the Marshalltown High School Jazz Band played with great skill and enthusiasm after dinner.

World Polio Day is October 24th!  Your donation of $100 or more before that date will be matched by Rotary International with 200 recognition points.  Please contact Kathy Baker by October 17th if you have questions.

When you make a cash donation to Rotary International Foundation, you accumulate credit toward becoming a Paul Harris Fellow.  You also receive Rotary  recognition points which cannot be used by you for any purpose except to give them to another Rotarian, a family member, or a friend so that he or she, too, may become a Paul Harris Fellow.  President Scott is asking each Marshalltown member to consider giving his or her extra points to another Marshalltown Rotarian so we can become one of a very small group of clubs with 100% Paul Harris Fellows.  Give Scott a call if you have questions or would like to participate in this effort.

President Scott Neff will donate $25 to the Marshalltown Rotary Foundation and $25 to Rotary International Foundation in honor of the two August trivia contest winners.   Bettie Bolar's name was drawn from those who correctly identified our three club goals for 2011-2012:  1) Increase the number of members in the club; 2) Improve attendance at the weekly meetings; and 3) Increase contributions to Marshalltown and International Rotary Foundations.  Bonnie Lowry's name was drawn from those who knew that those who donate $1000 to Rotary International Foundation are designated Paul Harris Fellows.  Congratulations to Bettie and Bonnie!

Thanks to Chairman Ken Anderson for a very successful Rural-Urban Dinner at Consumers Energy on August 30th, jointly sponsored by Marshalltown Chamber of Commerce, Marshall County Farm Bureau, and Marshalltown Rotary.  Following a meal prepared by the Marshall County Cattlemen and Smokin' G's, the group was thoroughly entertained and educated by Barrett Barr, economist for John Deere and son of Paul and Carrie Barr, as he spoke about the economy in general and the farm economy in particular.

Many thanks to Royal Young for generously sharing his sweet corn with all Rotarians who attended the July 26th meeting!

As all of our local members are aware, Marshalltown and the surrounding area suffered from straight line winds of 75 to 100 miles per hour in the very early morning hours of Monday, July 11th.  This derecho caused extensive tree and building damage, resulting in an extended power outage.  The July 11th board meeting was postponed one week and the July 12th Rotary meeting was canceled because both the Tremont and Elmwood were without electricity.  Alliant and Consumers Energy work crews put in long days, and by Friday nearly everyone had power.

More than 300 people witnessed Master Sergeant Todd Eipperle receiving the Bronze Star during a "Welcome Home" ceremony held September 17th.  Marshalltown Rotary helped plan the community event that recognized Eipperle who was wounded while serving in Afghanistan.  Thanks to Vic Hellberg for the idea, Denny Grabenbauer for acting as Master of Ceremonies, and Mark Osmundson for providing the sound system.  Thanks also to Michael Schlesinger, Clark Wideman, and Mark Osmundson for providing media coverage.

Who is the new Rotary International President?  President Scott Neff will donate $25 in Sarah Hesmer's name to Rotary International Foundation because she knew the answer to that question.  At the July 19th meeting, President Scott announced his plan to add a one-question trivia contest to one meeting per month, with Scott making a donation in the winner's name.  At Mayor Gene Beach's suggestion, a second monthly question will be added, with the winner's award being a $25 donation from Scott to the Marshalltown Rotary Foundation.  (The new Rotary International President is Kalyan Banerjee from India.)
