Now that our District Rotarians are safely home we are
planning the next steps for helping our friends is Haiti. There are many
Rotarian first responders volunteering with different NGOs mobilized and active
in providing immediate relief. Many clubs have started projects raising money,
collecting food and clothing, supporting Rotary's Shelterbox projects, etc. Our District has a rich tradition of club and
member involvement in Haiti with water projects, maternal and child health
projects, literacy and education, etc. If your club has a project that you are
already supporting, then please continue that support. If your club would like
to utilize our District Disaster Relief Committee resources, then we will be
collecting monetary donations that will be used exclusively for Haiti relief and
rebuilding. In addition to supporting immediate needs, some members are already
working on longer-term projects related to vocational training for prosthetics
for amputation victims, PTSD projects to minimize the long-term emotional trauma
with the children of Haiti, microlending for vocational opportunities, clean
water, etc. In addition to the "hand out" immediately needed, Rotarians are
committed to the "hand up" so that out of this tragedy will come a hope for the
future.

Check Our
New District YOUTUBE Page Featuring District 5890 Governor Ed Charlesworth in
Leipzig, Germany
Click to check out District
5890's new YOUTUBE page, which features our own DG ED
CHARLESWORTH in a short video from the Leipzig Rotary Peace Convention. Ed says:
We don't represent anything other than service
to humanity. And when I see the 100,000 people marching through the streets,
carrying a candle for peace, and protecting the flame with their other hand,
that to me IS Rotary because it represents something that you have to have both
hands on the task of serving humanity. 150,000 people peacefully
marched the streets of Leipzig to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of Germany's
re-unification - - we're proud that Ed and Robin were there!

The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for ourselves and our children. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures, thus planting the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding.
