Rotary's Annual Fishing Event for Third Graders is Saturday, April 25th at Sandy Wool Lake at Ed Levin Park in Milpitas. We need volunteers to help the kids set up tackle, bait hooks (no worms!) and net fish. Volunteers need not be Rotarians. There will be approximately 300 kids and their teachers from three local inner-city schools.

This is just a friendly reminder for tomorrow's event!

Some quick notes to share:
  • We will be there rain or shine!  So, please dress accordingly.
  • Please arrive at 7:30 am for the volunteer orientation.
  • Do NOT use Google Maps for directions.  They will take you far out of your way and it is not the shortest path.  Use this instead:
From downtown San Jose:
Take Hwy 280 to Hwy 680 towards Milpitas Take the Calaveras Road Exit east towards foothills Turn Left at Downing Road (2.1 miles) and follow the signs to the lake If you arrive at the Spring Valley Golf Course on Calaveras Road you have gone too far. Turn around and go back to Downing Road. (see attachment for a handy PDF map)
  • Don't forget to bring nail clippers or a small knife to cut fishing line.
  • Finally, here are some FAQs that others have asked Christine...
Question: I've never been to this park so I'm wondering if it will be easy to find the lake?  Will it be marked?  I Mapquested it and it seems like a large park.
Answer: From what I hear, it's a large park but there will be signs telling you where to go ….please see attached directions

Question: I've never done one of these fishing events, so once I get there, will there be someone I need to speak with to determine what task I'll be doing?
Answer: I've never done something like this either. Orientation for the volunteers is at 7:30am . I'm sure there will be a tent or sign or something that indicates where we go.

Question: Is the expectation that volunteers will do the full 5 hours? I will need to leave a little early but I don't want to end up leaving anyone stranded.
Answer: Yes, but if you gotta go, you gotta go.  You will not be leaving anyone stranded. Thanks in advance for coming and doing as much as you can.

Event turn-out:

Rotaracters from the Silicon Valley and UC Santa Cruz clubs each took care of 3-4 children for an exciting day at the lake! Although not more than 20 fishes were caught amongst the 300 or so children, it was extremely fun! Many of us fished for the first time and the BBQ was a great finish!
