  Speaker Information Exchange
Thread Started: 08 May 2006
The purpose of this forum is to permit club program chairs to exchange information about outstanding speakers from their clubs who would be willing to speak to other clubs in the district. When posting this information, you should, of course, obtain permission from the speaker first, but then if you can give a brief synopsis of their program and provide contact information, this would be helpful to other program chairs.

Ed Mattson has writen a book about cancer survivors and experimental treatments and has started a rotary international cancer survivors group. He is a very good speaker, not only on cancer, but also on international projects. He is attempting to track international projects to get clubs and districts to work together where possible. He is also a great resource for logistics. He has a list where every states national guard has members stationed and frequently if help is needed in a foreign country, the national guard may be able to help.

Bob will speak about "Innovative Rotary Projects in Zambia and Zimbabwe" on 19-Feb-07 at Evanston Lighthouse. ShelterBox
Post Date: 03 Mar 2008
As the District 6440 Representatives for ShelterBox USA, Andrew Kuby, Donna Gulley (Northbrook) and Cynthia Mikal (Fox Lake) have a program to introduce ShelterBox to your members and show how to get involved in this international service project. www.shelterbox.org gives detailed information about the boxes, including how each one provides a home for ten people when disaster strikes and identifying places where the boxes are being used. They are a simple, low cost way to foster service above self. Our goal is to speak before each of the 71 clubs in our district and have all clubs contribute one or more boxes during the coming year. We can bring a sample of the box and tent to your club and/or we have a video presentation. Please contact Andrew Kuby at ShelterBox6440@gmail.com or 847-922-8201 Thank you.

Steve Bob, Fox Valley Micro Loan Fund
Post Date: 11 Sep 2008
Dear Fellow Rotary Club member: Is your club looking for a speaker for one of your upcoming meetings? If so, I would like to recommend Steve Bob, the Executive Director of the Fox Valley Micro Loan Fund. For the past couple of years I have been on the board of the Fox Valley Micro Loan Fund (FVMLF). FVMLF, a non-profit based out of Elgin, helps business owners in the area who have great business ideas but are unable to access conventional bank financing. This is very similar to the micro enterprise work that Rotary supports internationally, but this program works with businesses located in our hometowns in Illinois. Steve Bob is willing to come and make a presentation to your Rotary Club about FVMLFâ?Ts work. He is a good speaker and will share with you about the micro enterprise work being done here in the Chicago suburbs. If you would like to have him speak to your club, please contact him at 847-608-9320 or steve@fvmlf.org. I think you will enjoy it and learn about how FVMLF helps growing and starting businesses here. Thanks, Barb Regnitz Schaumburg AM Rotary Club

Catherine Painter of the Merit School of Music
Post Date: 30 Apr 2009
Catherine Painter, director of development and marketing, Merit School of Music in Chicago, is interested in speaking to your club. She can be reached by phone at 312-676-3693 or by email at cpainter@meritmusic.org. Here is what she told us: "I had the privilege of making a presentation about Merit to the Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club at the invitation of member Karen Donnan, whose husband David sits on our Board of Trustees. I really enjoyed meeting the Club members, and I think they enjoyed learning about our School. Merit's mission of changing lives through music seems in line with Rotary's mission of service, and it would be a pleasure to share the organization with more Rotary Clubs. "We have a polished Power Point presentation featuring photos of our students and music that they've played. The photos and music bring to life the core beliefs that shape our programs and which we describe in the presentation: Cost should not be a barrier to musical study. Music education is transformational. Musical study is universally appealing. A culture of high expectations and a supportive peer group contribute to success. Long-term relationships make a big difference."

Arlington Heights Sunrise members enjoyed hearing about "Reach Out and Read" gicen by pediatrician Nirupama Mahidhara. Reach Out and Read makes literacy promotino a standard part of pediatric primary care so children grow up with books and a love of reading. In the exam room, trained doctors and nurses talk to parents about the importance of reading aloud and at each check up from 6 months to 5 years, children receive a new book to take home.
