Darryl A. Schroeder, Bayou City principal and Rodeo Vice President stated, "We are delighted that Rotary Club of Houston's prestigious DCA Dinner will be among the very first events to be held at our new 40,000-square-foot facility."
Proceeds benefit RCoH's Community Programs in community healthcare, education, and youth mentoring, as well as international services. Established in 1912, Rotary Club of Houston is a social welfare organization providing programs and opportunities for community volunteerism.
Past honorees include such philanthropists and humanitarians as Jim McIngvale, George Strake, former President George H. W. Bush, former first lady Barbara Bush, and renowned surgeon Michael E. DeBakey, M.D.
Former HLS&R Chairmen of the board and past DCA honoree Don Jordan, commented, "As Rotary's 1998 Distinguished Citizen honoree, and an active member of the Rodeo Executive Committee, I have seen the positive impact that Houston Rotarians have had with their volunteer work. They have improved the Houston condition and continue to work to ensure improved health, education, and understanding throughout the world. It is with pleasure that I look forward to seeing the Rotary Club of Houston honor a great Houston institution, the Houston Rodeo, on May 14."
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo President Skip Wagner recently spoke at a Rotary Club luncheon to discuss the economic impact of the Show, a 501(c)(3) charity that benefits the youth of Texas. Since the Show's beginning in 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has committed more than $265 million to scholarships, research, endowments, calf scramble participants, junior show exhibitors, the Rodeo Institute for Teacher Excellence, School Art participants, and other educational and youth programs.
"We are honored that the Rotary Club of Houston, which helps judge some of our scholarships, has chosen the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo to receive its Distinguished Citizen Award." said Wagner. "The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the Rotary Club are two outstanding volunteer service organizations that share some of the same values of education and youth mentoring."
