Every year approximately 7,000 students ages 15 to 18 go abroad under the auspices of the Rotary Youth Exchange program for one academic year.
Rotary Youth Exchange students live with a host family in a country other than their own. They may learn a new language; they will learn a new way of living and a great deal about themselves. Exchange students are part of the ambassador team of Rotary International. The object of the program is to bring the world closer together.
So, each year, local Rotary districts and clubs worldwide arrange thousands of international Youth Exchanges for high school-aged students. It is standard practice for applicants interested in the program to be screened by using detailed applications and interviews. This process helps ensure that only highly responsible and mature students are sent on an exchange. Generally, students are selected based on the following criteria:
1. Scholastic record
2. Linguistic ability
3. Community involvement
4. Potential as a cultural ambassador
5. Age (15 - 17)
Many of the Rotary Clubs in District 9500 are involved in Youth Exchange. The selection of outgoing students generally commences in March/April of each year.
