This Week, May 23rd, 2013
This week Jerid Keefer takes the stage with one of the coaches from Gonzaga (yet to be announced) to bring us "Coaches vs Cancer". They're not playing for sneaker contracts. Fame. Or Glory. They are playing for lives.. Each year Coaches vs Cancer nationally donates millions of dollars to fight cancer. They've been able to raise over $6 million for the American Cancer Society and other local cancer fighting organizations in Spokane since 2002.

How does someone become homeless? What is our perception of homelessness and what is the reality of homelessness in Spokane? Next week we are joined by Robb McCann and Marilee Roloff who will answer these and many other questions about the "Myths and Facts Surrounding Homelessness in Spokane".

Please drop by the picnic shelter at Manito Park on May 28th between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and spend some time with our Veterans. The Veterans' Committee is hosting a very special BBQ for our Vets. Great food, great music...but the best gift we can give our Vets is our time. Please plan now to take a few minutes from your Tuesday afternoon to come say hello and thank you!

French? German? Perhaps an eastern Celtic dialect only sung in the shower when no one is home. Whatever it is- it is known that language and culture enrich our lives and broaden our views. Your Rotary is a verb in promoting world peace through active exchange of high school students, adult friendship exchanges and group study exchanges to list a few. The Youth Exchange program is a 77 year-old Peace Initiative that is the largest exchange of high school students in the world. Susan and I have just returned from a week of chauffeuring and chaperoning 14 Rotary exchange students on the 5080 District trip. Our two 12-passenger vans were a moving United Nations representing nine countries. We were splendidly hosted by Rotary all over British Columbia. Susan is wrapping up a movie that will be available on the Rotary website in just a few days. This is a very cool program of which we have every right to be very proud. Our district has 22 incoming students for the next school year and two will be hosted by Club 21. A French boy of 15 and a German girl of 17 will be coming in August for the academic year at Lewis and Clark high school. A family does not have to be Rotarian to host a student though it is preferred. I have two requests- one if you have ever hosted an exchange student, been on an exchange, or been involved with youth exchange please let me, Suzy or Patrick Jones know and two- consider hosting one of these students for a third of the academic year. It’s good for your kids, your family and your own cultural and linguistic skills and amplifies the opportunities for service that rotary so beautifully provides. Thanks for considering. Feel free to call for more information, (509) 747-6011. And we really appreciate your getting the word out to those you feel would represent our club well in hosting. Thank you.
~Your Immediate Past President, Ira Amstadter

Sign up now for the Rotary District Conference. You can do this online at the District 5080 Website. This year's conference promises to hold its own special flair! Already noted as the denim weekend, come casual! You will enjoy excellent speakers, learn about what other clubs are doing throughout our District and enjoy amazing fellowship. Rather than the traditional Governor's Ball, District Governor Michelle Lee is having a good, old-fashioned Barn Dance! They are working on combining this event with New Generations and have a Pig Roast and Martini Party on the agenda as well. A great mix of business and fun - this is the year to attend! Please review further details online at the District 5080 website and register soon. Click Here for the District 5080 website!

A case of type 1 polio has been reported in the Banadir region of Somalia, the country’s first case since March 2007. In response, an immunization campaign took place May 14th - 16th, aimed at reaching more than 350,000 children in the Banadir region. Rotary also mourns the loss of a friend in the polio eradication effort, Abdul Waheed Khan, who died tragically in an attack May 13th in Pakistan.
