What can I say about my first (Rotary) trip to Cuba?
Tropical feel, Hawaii-like landscape, hot afternoons; long and rich Spanish history - forts and 300 year old buildings; frozen in time from 1959; rich agricultural feel; wonderful Latin music; creative artists, slow pace of life with little hustle and bustle; warm hearts; great collection of ancient cars, supplemented by a great collection of horse drawn taxi-cabs and fat tire bicycles;and pretty good food.
What an experience (for the 14 traveling Rotarians and friends) it was to see this country and its people, so close to our borders. In starting this project and making it happen, this was a huge a gift that our fellow Rotarian, Teresa Erdman, brought to the travelers' lives. An eye-opener by any definition, it was a project/trip of "paving the way". The current medical equipment project is still active - undergoing an arduous approval process from both the Cuban and U.S. governments. Sooner, rather than later, the medical imaging equipment will find its way home to William Soler Children's Cardiac Hospital in Havana.

Jim Walker provided us with and excellent inspiration on the power of being a great role model with a story about his grandchildren and shopping carts. He always tells a good story. Jim also took the opportunity to speak a little about Hugh, a great person and a great Rotarian who recently lost his hard fought battle to cancer. Hugh was certainly a great role model for all and Jim finished his comments by announcing his donation to the CREF endowment fund in Hugh's name; it was immediately matched by President Hsing. What a great way to start our meeting.

On trips, Rotarians always bring some extra $$ to pass out where they see the need. Helene Davis and Marj Mancuso gave a presentation on the gifts from the trip to Cuba (Art supplies and help for the Orphanage) as well as the extra challenges presented in Cuba to accomplish this. The team really appreciated the support from the club that allowed them to make things happen.
We then had a chance to learn more from Cecelia Babkirk and Aruna Goradia about recent support in Guatemala (latrines) and potential support in Kenya (redoing the kitchen area at a refugee camp). Once again, we can see how our support helps our brothers and sisters all over the world.

President Hsing Kung gave us an excellent summary of his year in office, highlighting many things including his main goals:
- Full Participation and Having Fun- over 95% participation, definitely a fun year and a special session at the district conference
- Raising nearly $250K for charity- a great year for our partners
- Increasing our membership to over 200! and
- Highlighting our new initiatives in Education
If you missed the meeting you can see Hsings slides of the year in review by clicking here.
Hsing closed by acknowledging the real people behind his presidency this year, Helen Davis and Judy Wilson

Eleanor Watanebe reminded everyone that they had recently received a survey request and it was important to fill out. Results of the short survey will help the committee to better plan activities for members. Those who respond to the survey by June 28 will have a chance to win a $25 Whole Foods gift certificate.
Padma Chari encouraged Rotarians to participate in the Run for Water event, which would take place on July 14 at the Baylands Park. Register here (choose Cupertino Rotary as the cause) or contact Padma for more information. Check out the Sevathon website here.

Jeremy Nishahara introduced the San Jose Taiko Organization. The presented an excellent program that explained much about their organizationa and the history of Taiko. The music was fantastic and a few of our members even had a chance to demonstrate their skills. Learn more about them at their website : http://www.taiko.org/ and check out the full program here: http://vimeo.com/channels/257384

If you would like to be on Hsing's Weekly Agenda please contact Hsing Kung or Helene Davis, by the Sunday night before the meeting.
If you would like to include slides as part of your announcement, please send them to Gigi Lam well in advance of the meeting, at least 3 to 4 days, and she will be able to include your info in the flow of the meeting - either as background, or at a critical moment to reinforce your message when you are at the microphone for your one minute of fame.
This is particularly important for club chairs who want to announce meetings, accomplishments, or details that are better covered with more than a one minute verbal overview. Send Gigi bullet points and she will do the rest.
