 Club Bulletin week of 5/23/13

The Memorial Day Holiday is observed on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and later became an official federal holiday in 1971.  Decoration Day was originated by General John Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans in 1868.

Consider the wars involving the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (among the other battles, skirmishes and other military actions):

18th Century - American Revolution

19th Century - War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Civil War, Spanish-American War

20th Century - World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War

21st Century - Operation Enduring Freedom(Afghanistan), Operation Iraqi Freedom(Iraq)

Considering all the wars, battles, skirmishes and other military actions, the US has lost over 1.3 million people in the line of duty since its inception as a country.  We owe our gratitude and are forever indebted to the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives for our freedoms and liberties. THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU!

When he was a little boy his uncle called him “Sparky”, after a comic-strip horse named Spark Plug. School was all but impossible for Sparky. He failed every subject in the eighth grade. He flunked physics in high school, getting a grade of zero. He also flunked Latin, algebra and English. And his record in sports wasn’t any better. Though he did manage to make the school’s golf team, he promptly lost the only important match of the season. Oh, there was a consolation match; he lost that too
