Hobart Rotary Helps Hurricane Sandy Victims

Hobart Rotary pulled together and helped hurricane Sandy victims with generous donations.

The following amounts were remitted to the clubs below. A letter was included which reads:

 Dear Fellow Rotarians:

The Hobart Rotary Club of Hobart, New York has been able to raise funds for Sandy Relief and is pleased to enclose a check for $250 for your continued work on recovery and rebuilding efforts.

When Irene and Lee hit the Catskills in 2011, we were inundated with outpouring from all areas. As we like to say, downstate helped upstate. Now it is our turn in a small way to repay the kindness.

Please accept our contribution on behalf of the many in this community and others who share the Rotary spirit of service before self.

2013 Report to District 7170 on Council on Legislation

After several months of input and preparation, the 2013 COL in Chicago started Sunday, April 21, with 532 District Representatives from across the world.  There was an aura of excitement in the air as everyone registered and went into the first session to be briefed and oriented on the COL process.  It will be Monday when we start addressing the long list of resolutions and enactments, but Sunday afternoon the training committee conducted a mock resolution discussion to demonstrate the procedure.  The technology people demonstrated their equipment which will be used for electronic voting and language translation.

The rest of the report is downloaded on the right for you to read in its entirety.

REVISED Multi-District Conference and Golf Tournament

Rotary Districts 7170 & 7190

The new and revised Multi-District Conference and Golf Tournament forms are in the column at the right.

The golf tournament for the 2013 Multi-District Conference will be held on Friday, May 31, at the premier golf course of the Turning Stone Resort & Casino, the Shenandoah Golf Course.  Proceeds from the golf tournament will be used to support both local and global Rotary service projects.

The tournament is open to everyone and we are especially looking for participation from our fellow Rotarians in Districts 7170 and 7190.  The cost for a four-person team (Captain-and Crew format) is $460; this includes greens fees, carts, a box lunch, and prizes.

Tee sponsorships are available for $50.  We are asking each club to either sponsor a tee or obtain one or more tee sponsorships from businesses within your community.  Attached are golf team sign-up forms and tee sponsor forms.

It should be a great day of golf at one of the finest golf courses in the Northeast.

Feel free to contact any of the tournament committee members with any questions.

Thank you for your support,

Dale Flinn, Governor, District 7170

Melissa Ward, Governor, District 7190

FOUNTATION MINUTE FOR THE WEEK OF May 27th

by Lana Rouff, Foundation Chair

Rotarian Wendy Marcus calls herself a bag lady: On her frequent walks around her neighborhood, she is never without a plastic bag, which she fills with everything from plastic wrappers to bottle caps to paper clips.

“Litter has always bugged me. Maybe I take after Lady Bird Johnson,” she says, referring to the conservationist (and wife of U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson) who, like Marcus, was a Texas native.

When the Rotary Club of Providence celebrated its centennial in 2011, Marcus and other members of the club’s environmental committee persuaded 100 Rotarians to join a campaign to reduce litter. In the now-annual month long event, culminating on Earth Day, 22 April, Rotarians recruit friends and family members to pick up trash – in their neighborhood, at their children’s soccer games, wherever they can – for 100 minutes each.

Like Lady Bird Johnson, Marcus also believes in beautification through planting. In 2012, she planted trees in Providence – her club donated eight London Plane trees to the city, and high school students helped plant them in a park across from City Hall.

Wendy’s efforts can be duplicated throughout District 7170! And don’t forget to wear a Rotary shirt – so your community knows that Rotary is present and cares!

Just a reminder! There are 5 weeks left to contribute to Rotary's Annual Fund for 2012-13 Rotary year. Your donation enables The Rotary Foundation to accomplish its mission of advancing world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviaton of poverty. Thank you for your generosity.

The weekend orientation of the Outbound GSE Team was held at Bountiful Blessings Bed and Breakfast in Freeville, NY on February 8, 9, 10th. It was a very snowy weekend, but most everyone was able to make the trip and once here there was no need to go out.

It is always good to build excitement about the GSE and this year we have both an inbound and outbound team. We have begun recruiting for clubs to be anchors for the inbound team and have filled approximately 1/2 of the slots with commitments from Stamford, Oneonta, Cooperstown and Endwell.  Brian Buttner and I are Co-Chairs this year and although there is still much to do, we are excited about being involved in the Group Study Exchange.

YOU'RE INVITED!!!!....THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE IS ONLY A FEW MONTHS AWAY!!!

See "Downloads" (at right) for your Registration Form

I want to take this opportunity to share my personal invitation to each and every one of you to join my wife Gayle and I and District Governor Melissa Ward from District 7190 at our annual District Conference. We will be convening at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York starting Friday, May 31 for three days of fun, fellowship, and celebration. Come celebrate with us! Celebrate another great year of Rotary and all of the accomplishments of our clubs and our members throughout the year! Celebrate the friendships, new and old, that Rotary brings to our lives!

Celebrate Peace with us!

Often I am asked, why attend the district conference? What’s in it for me? What is a district conference all about? The annual district conference is a chance to celebrate. We share our successes of the Rotary year. Successful projects, exceptional Rotarians and clubs all receive recognition. We get to learn new things – plenary and breakout sessions offer opportunities to learn new things Rotary and non-Rotary alike. We celebrate our youth and Youth Exchange Program with the Procession of the Flags, the candlelight ceremony, and the Youth Exchange Talent Show (worth the price of admission alone!). We conclude by celebrating the lives of Rotarians we have lost with our Memorial Service on Sunday.

When all is said and done, however, for me it comes down to the fellowship. The district conference is the greatest opportunity for Rotarians from around the district to come together to renew old friendships, create new friendships, network, and to catch up with old friends. Please join us, share with us, and celebrate with us!

See you at Turning Stone!

Yours in Rotary Service,

Dale and Gayle Flinn

Wow, what a busy month! You can tell because we’re already almost done with November and the October Governor’s Newsletter is just arriving in your mailbox. Actually it's my fault as there was a miscommunication about the newsletter this month (last month) that lead to it not being updated until now. My apologies to you all.

So much going on, it’s hard to know where to begin. Since most of my club visits are done I haven’t done as much traveling as in prior months, though there have been plenty of meetings to attend plus Membership and Foundation seminars. A few more observations from the road:

3 – Number of restaurants in the District called New York Pizza. None are related as far as I can tell. Marathon, New Berlin, and I forgot where the third one is.

3 – Number of officially designated, fully marked dips in the road – two on Route 81 and one on 88. The two on 81 have been filled/repaired at this point, but I haven’t been on that part of 88 for a while, so I’m not sure if it’s still there.

First ever – Closed Chinese restaurant. The China Taste in Marathon is closed and the space is for rent. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Chinese restaurant actually go out of business and I can’t remember ever driving through Marathon without seeing the China Taste restaurant there and I’ve been driving or riding through Marathon for a long time.

Congratulate the Schenevus-Worcester club on their 75th Anniversary! October 8, 1937 is their official date of charter and Jim and his fellow members are doing a great job carrying on the great tradition of Rotary in those communities. Thank you and congratulations!

I start this part of the newsletter with a heavy heart as we learned recently of a terrible tragedy in Oneonta.
Wendy Brown, a member of the Oneonta Rotary club and her husband Willis died tragically. From Paul Patterson, President of the Oneonta Rotary Club: “At a beautiful memorial service held at the Foothills Theater in Oneonta, I was able to pay a Rotary tribute to her and Willis for all they have done as Rotarians. We have established a Paul Harris Fellow in her honor. A spectacular veteran’s concert with a Glenn Miller Tribute and Andrews Sisters band recognizing WWII vets especially was held earlier yesterday. A great financial success also in large part because of a $1,500 {check} that arrived on my desk from Wendy the afternoon after she was killed. Whew! Rotarians were a rock throughout this long ordeal. I have never been prouder. This week is my Rotary moment.” And this from PDG Sam Koury from the Oneonta club as well: “Anyone that knew Wendy and wants to make a contribution can send it to Secretary Catrina Truesdell, PO Box 1122, Oneonta, New York, 13820. Funds will be deposited in the Oneonta Rotary Foundation.” We all send our thoughts and prayers to Wendy’s family and friends, fellow Rotarians, and community.

For some time now Janet has been researching possibilities for creating a district archive and she has wonderful news!

DISTRICT 7170 HISTORY TO BE STORED AT CORNELL UNIVERSITY

Cornell University’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections will be housing documents, records, photographs and other materials relating to the history of Rotary District 7170. This new initiative will ensure that the work of Rotarians on behalf of the District will be organized and preserved for use by researchers and scholars. Such documents provide unique testimony to the achievements of the District. Under the care of professional archivists, such records include District rosters, minutes of meetings, conference proceedings, programs, grants, budgets, surveys, awards, publicity and any other records which reflect the work of District leadership. These documents will provide accurate and informative records of the work of the District on behalf of clubs in Rotary District 7170.

Cornell University is also the home of the archives of the Ithaca Rotary Club and the Ithaca Sunrise Club.

If you have any historical materials relating to the work of District 7170, please contact Janet Steiner, Assistant Governor, at steinerjanet@gmail.com or call 607-273-0882.

The November Rotarian of the month is George Schwartzrauber.

George has been a vital teacher to many in Rotary.  George is always available anytime to any member who needs his help.

In addition, George is the current President of the Vestal Rotary Foundation; our tax-detuctable foundation that allows donors to give directly to the club in a tax-detuctable way.  Not just the foundation leader, George helped create the Foundation in the last year, working with lawyers and accountants to make sure everything was done correctly.

In addition to being co-secretary for our club, George has been a past President.  He also has helped created this year the Vestal Rotary Foundation Trivia Night, to benefit the club.  He also has taken it upon himself to help our club find our new 2nd Vice Preisdent, after our previous 2nd VP could not fullfill his commitments.

George is always willing to answer any questions.  He is very fair in his opinions, and is always ready to help when asked.

He is an extremely valuable member to our club.

We still need your nominations!
We have received a few, so don’t panic if your nominee isn’t the Rotarian of the Month right away, we will get to them all in due time.

If there is someone in your club who is the glue to the organization, the behind-the-scenes, out-of-the-limelight person whom you believe deserves to be recognized for their efforts, please let us know! Send a photo and a brief story about your nominee to Cindy Kain (goddess48@aim.com) by the 25th of each month so that we will be able to include the recipient(s) in that month’s newsletter.

Anybody can make a nomination, you don’t have to be the club president or an officer, so start looking in the back corners and under the tables to find those extra-special Rotarians.

We will also be recognizing them at the Pass the Gavel dinner at the end of the year again. Send them in any time, if we have too many at once, we will just spread them out and acknowledge them one at a time.

Would you like to promote something your club is doing with other clubs in your area or the entire district?
                               Image
All this is possible through the use of our District 7170 website – and it’s easy. Just send all pertinent information (date, time, place, event, and cost – if any) to either Chris Haase haase@ithaca.edu or Cindy Kain goddess48@aim.com.

Please allow a few days for posting on the web site.
