 Welcome To Aurora Northwest Rotary

Welcome to the Spokane Aurora NW Rotary website.  We are an active club of around 45 members.  The Club was chartered on January 5, 1984 and on January 5 of 2014 we will be celebrating our 30th Birthday.

Other Rotarian club members have frequently talked about the camaraderie they see in our club.  This is not surprising as we like one another and our meetings keep us in touch with each others lives.  Our club is one of the more informal Rotary clubs in dress from business formal to shorts from the soccer field. (One of our member’s refs both High School and College Soccer)

What binds us together is a passion for wanting to help to give back to the community and the world.  Joining Rotary is our multiplier allowing us to do greater good by combining our efforts.  We also combine with other Spokane and district area Rotary Clubs to do larger projects like water wells in Africa and Library Improvements in Mexico.  Listed below will be our last year’s projects.

In order to fund the projects we have decided on, there are three Fund Raisers a year.  The first starting in October is a cruise raffle in which if you win you have a choice of one of four cruises for two on a Princess ship in a balcony room with a $1,000 for other expenses.  The second is our Lilac Century Bike Ride which will be celebrating its 21st year the last weekend in April, 2014.  With almost 800 riders and a brick transition for the Triathlete we are the earliest major bike ride in Spokane that caters to families as well as serious athletes. The Final fund raiser is a Golf Tournament held in May.

During Christmas we provide Christmas baskets to 48 or more families in need. The baskets are shopping carts full of food in addition there are Chuck E Cheese coupons for free pizza and tokens to play the games and a book for each child.  During this time we also pair with KXLY “coats for kids program” to provide children’s coats for our families.  In the spring, we sponsor a Summer Reading Program with four elementary schools where books have been specially selected by the student and their teachers for 4th and 5th grades.  This helps keep education continuing at home and provides the student their very own book to read and trade with other students. We provide $1,000 scholarships for training or college for high school seniors usually there are six.  Every month we honor outstanding students picked by their counselors from Rogers, Mead and Mt Spokane high schools.

Rotary is about “service above self” but we certainly have fun together doing the service.  If you are interested in being a part of this kind of organization; we invite you to look us over.  Meetings are once a week on Thursday’s from noon to one on the north side of Spokane at the Canaan Buffet.  This is your personal invitation to come.  Just email me at karenschind@earthlink.net and I will send you directions and let you know who the speaker will be for that week.

I hope to see you soon,

Karen Schindler, 2013-2014 President of Spokane Aurora NW Rotary Club
