Released at the 2013 Annual Convention was a very nice promotional video clip produced for Incoming District Governor Greg Coldwell by our neighbouring host club New Minas Sunrise for next years convention.  For those in the club that couldn't make it to this years convention you should start to be aware of what's coming up.  New Minas Rotarian Greg White was at the helm for this great promo production and I am sure I recognize an included singer as one of our own songbirds, Susan.

The Group Study Exchange Team from Malaysia and Singapore spent the Victoria day weekend visiting Rotarians and cultural sights in the valley. In between rain drops they hiked to Cape Split and visited the wineries in the Wolfville area. The team is lead by Rotarian June Jonet, a design and media specialist from Singapore. Her four colleagues are Pei Yan Wiu , a marine engineer form Singapore, Yixin Liu , a water engineer from Singapore, Jocelyn Maluda, a Wetlands environmental education officer from Malaysia and Bee Kee Gan, an early childhood educator also from Malaysia.

Recess at the De La Bat School in Worcester, South Africa

The International Services Committee is pleased to announce that the application for a Matching Grant submitted by the Rotary Club of Worcester in South Africa and the Rotary Club of Kentville has been approved. The grant will go toward providing equipment in refurbished hostels and tuition for two schools for the deaf in Worcester, South Africa – the De La Bat School for the Deaf and the Nuwe Hoop Centre for the Hearing Impaired. Both the schools struggle with a shortage of funds due to the fact that the majority of students come from impoverished backgrounds and can afford neither tuition or the hostel fees. As a consequence, both schools operate under a deficit.

The Rotary Foundation will be awarding $16,518 to the project as part of a matching grant. Three clubs in the Atlantic Provinces – the Rotary Club of Kentville ($2000); the Rotary Club of Avalon Northeast ($1500); and the Rotary Club of Stephenville ($1500) as well as District 7820 ($9000) plus the Worcester club in South Africa($8000) and their District 9350 ($1000) are contributing a total of $23,000. This results in a grand total of $39,000 going to the two schools.

The Rotary Club of Worcester will oversee the distribution of funds, monitor the project and submit progress reports.

Cameron and Peter administer oral polio vaccine to children of the Awing tribal village

PDG Peter Smith and his grandson, Cameron, recently returned from a trip to Cameroon.  Cameron is the son of Kentville Rotarian, Rea O'Leary.  The duo were in Africa representing Rotary with the purpose of completing a polio immunization clinic, reviewing a recent school bus project, checking progress on completion of 11 primary school latrines and handing over much needed school books.

ImageThe photos tell the story, we had 10 soggy but enthusiastic litter pickers Saturday morning April 20th, and broke into 2 teams, collecting 27 bags of litter, and one bag of recyclables.  Thanks to Town Environmental Committee members Eric Bolland and Tim Hughes for adding to our numbers.

Our Rotarian volunteers concentrated on the Cornwallis Bridge Area, and the portion of the rail trail between River Street and the Town Parks Shed, including some of the ball park, tennis court area, and Park Street. Our pickers climbed, dug and collected in places that show, but are hard to get to with normal staff and gear. We didn't get to Chester Avenue and some of our other potential spots this year, but we can try a bit harder next year, if volunteers permit. We have reported back to Clean NS on our participation and bag count, and submitted a Kentville Rotary photo for their web site.  Click "More" To See Team Photos

Image Jeanine Parker from the Rotary Club of Sherwood Park in Edmonton, sits atop one of the three new ecostoves funded by the Rotary Club of Kentville for the Birere High School in southwestern Uganda.  The previous stoves were constructed of stone and were highly inefficient.  They used a tremendous amount of wood and sent billows of heavy smoke into the air.  These new ecostoves are clean, efficient and environmentally friendly using a fraction of the wood and allowing the cooks to prepare meals for the children without the discomfort and health hazard of heavy smoke.

ImageImage   On March 24th, exchange student, Sergio Mejia from Spain, accompanied Bruce and Heather Tupper on a trip to Parrsboro to learn about a very Canadian industry - the making of maple syrup.  Kerwin Davison of Davison Farms in Parrasboro, demonstrates to Sergio how the Sugar Maples are tapped and the sap taken by special lines to a storage tank in the woods.  Back at the lodge, Sergio sees how the sap is converted in to maple syrup and gets to sample some of the delicious stuff on his blueberry pancakes.

ImageOn the way back to school from a Rotary luncheon, exchange student Sergio Mejia received his first exposure towards the Veterinarian Academy.  A Noggin's Farm Holstein brought new life into the barn just moments before Sergio walked in. Never-the-less, Sergio jumped in to assist Rotarian, Dr Randall Bishop, by administering an intravenous calcium supplement to aid ol' Bessie's recovery.  Meanwhile the calf was greeted by the rest of her relatives intently looking on from their neigbhouring stalls.

More than 20 brave Rotarians & Partners' answered the Social Committee's call

to Games Night !

Thanks to Susan and Joop's hospitality and cozy home, & regardless of the fierce competition,

everyone left feeling like a winner.

Mother Nature tried her best to throw a curve on the event but it only made things more beautiful.

As commonly said up on the Big Hill: "Regardless of the snowfall, if you can drive across the valley floor,

you'll most likely get up the mountain!"
