Congratulations to the Foxboro Rotary 2013 Alzheimer's Walk team, which raised more money than all other teams in Rhode Island. Another congratulations to Karen and Jake for being among the biggest individual fundraisers. Well done!

On March 25, we held a special evening meeting at the Foxboro Country Club. Drs. Synder and Lim in the Lifespan Department of Neurology (part of Brown University) discussed the latest research on Alzheimer's Dementia. We learned that research studies are now targeting individuals much earlier in the disease, and even those who are asymptomatic, to initiate pharmacological interventions before the brain is compromised. Also in attendance was Annie Murphy from the Alzheimer's Association. It was an incredibly fascinating presentation. Anyone who would like more information about participating in research studies and/or looking for resources to deal with this and other dementias, please get in touch with Karen at secretary@foxbororotary.org.

Kay was awarded a Paul Harris Award at the March 25th meeting. For her numerous contributions to the Rotary and to the community in general, we are very grateful.

The International Committee has been very busy. Activities include:

    • The final report for our Naga City Phillipines project has been completed. The

Clean Filter project provides clean and safe water to over 10,000 people. We teamed up with Rockland Hanson, Plymouth, Stoughton, Mansfield, Hyannis, Bridgewater, Duxbury, Holbrook, Middleboro and Naga City Rotary Clubs. We also funded the project with our first District matching grant.

    • Short Term Exchange Program – Bill is investigating training that Lew and he will need to undergo. Bill is getting information on the program into various schools.
    • Sanitation in India - Mary Graham renewed her Foxboro Rotary membership (welcome back!) and will be coming to talk about a project in India.  A Rotarian from India had come to speak to our club in July.  Mary actually went to his club in person while she was in India doing a nursing internship.
    • Shelter Boxes The District is investing in Shelter Box, which distributed 4000 boxes in Philippines, Syria, and Pakistan.  We will be involved in donating to this effort.
    • Medical Assistance in Rural Appalachia – Interact has three students interested in attending. Multiple details to help bring this trip to fruition are still being discussed.
    • Grey water project in Mexico - We are investing in helping communities re-use rainwater.

The RYLA program in District 7950 is a unique opportunity for tomorrow’s leaders to gain hands-on experience in developing leadership skills with a focus on community service.  While the RYLA Conference is for high school sophomores and juniors, RYLA also provides opportunities for RYLA Alumni to step forward and work with Rotarians and other organizations to put their leadership skills into action through the coordination of leadership seminars and community service projects throughout the year.  Our 2010 theme was M.K. Gandhi’s  ‘Be the Change You Want to See in the World’ – a theme that has become embodied in the work that our RYLArian Alumni have undertaken since then.

This year’s RYLA Conference takes place at the beautiful Cape Cod Sea Camps in Brewster, MA from May 9th to May 11th, 2014.  Every year the program and new theme are chosen by RYLA Alumni, selected from previous year’s RYLA participants for their leadership skills.  Together with their Rotarian advisors, the Alumni develop a weekend filled with engaging speakers, thought provoking workshops, seminars and the ever popular ropes course.
