"Bridges to Songdo (Sunday Reception, 4 - 7 p.m.)"
|
We were dark this past Friday, but today (Sunday) we gather at the beautiful Rolling Hills home of Hang Up Moon for an afternoon (4 - 7 p.m.) reception honoring Rotary Foundation Chair-elect Dong Kurn Lee, whose support for our Bridges to Songdo project has been invaluable. Lee served as president of Rotary International in 2008-09, selecting as his theme for the year "Make Dreams Real." He is chair of the Bubang Co. Ltd. and Bubang Techron Ltd. manufacturing companies in Seoul. Since 1994 he has served as the honorary consul to the Italian Consulate, and in 2005 was named an international goodwill ambassador by the president of Korea. He has been a Rotarian since 1971, and has served as a District Governor, RI Treasurer and Director. Lee has been awarded the Order of Industrial Merit by the government of Korea. He and his wife Ja have two sons and two daughters.
We also honor the Interactors of Chadwick School and selected members of the Chadwick community, including faculty, parents and staff, who have shared our vision of an establishing both a sister Interact Club at Chadwick's Songdo, Korea campus, and sponsoring Rotary Club in Songdo with whom we will someday collaborate in International Service projects and enjoy cultural and social exchanges.
Among other guests today we also expect to be joined by District Governor Lew Bertrand, Lt. Gov. Dean Reuter, District Governor-Nominee D.J. Sun, PDG Rick Mendoza, PDG David Moyers and other senior Rotary leaders from the district. Also: PVP Chamber President Eileen Hupp and selected dignitaries from the Palos Verdes Peninsula. There is no charge for club members, Interact students and District leaders. Guest may attend @ $40/person. Heavy hors d'doeuvres (16 separate dishes) and wine and soft beverages will be served. Business attire. To make reservations, click link for club president Greg O'Brien on home page for this site. Do not miss this elegant event.

""United In Service:" Joint Meeting with Lions, Kiwanis and Sunset Rotary"
|
Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe joins us as our speaker today when we celebrate service on the Peninsula with members of the Palos Verdes Sunset Rotary, Palos Verdes Lions Club and the Rolling Hills Estates Kiwanis Club. This first-ever event in our area has been tried successfully elsewhere, and is a great opportunity to show our community the faces and forces of four organizations that are united in their commitment to community and international service. Guests are welcome. All club members must make reservations for this event. Many thanks to club president-nominee Carolyn Lehr for arranging for today's speaker.

"The implausible prior occupations of some club members"
|
Are you old enough to remember John Daly, Bennett Cerf, Arlene Francis and Dorothy Kilgallen? The career paths some of some of our members have had highly unlikely beginnings. Their prior jobs (until now a closely held secret) will be the topic of a lively club meeting today. Organized by member Linda Elliott, today's entertaining program will be a recreation of the three-time Emmy Award-winning television show (1950-1967) "What's My Line?" Join us as one or more panels of clever interrogators attempt to strip away the years to discover the surprising former occupations of some of our members. If you are not attending the International Convention in Lisbon, you will definitely want to be at Rotary today. By all means, bring a guest! In fact, why stop at one?
