Members of the Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills went to Guatemala to implement an ambitious food security and sustainability project to benefit the students of Ak’ Tenamit's Father Tom Moran Education Center and in the long-term, their communities. They worked alongside students and teachers from the school to build two 4'x24' Aquaponic systems that will hold 5000 tilapia and provide 400 sqft of growing beds. The tanks will not only supplement students' meals but serve as a practical classroom where students will gain experience maintaining a project that can provide income and food for their communities. The tanks are a great fit for the students and their communities because tilapia is a nutritious fish, easy to care for, and the tank design is extremely sustainable. The pumps in the pond filter water from the fish tanks up into a series of gravel beds in which a variety of plants and vegetables will be grown. The waste from the fish serves as a fertilizer for the plants and these plants filter the water before it returns to the fish tank. In the future, the Lake in the Hills Rotary Club hope to build a total of 9 tanks, which will allow students to have fish on a weekly basis; their current diet consists of rice, beans, and tortillas. | | Posted by Bob Huckins on Apr 12, 2012 Dear President Jim: It is my pleasure to congratulate you and the Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills for being awarded the 2011-2012 Changemaker Award by Rotary International President Kalyan Banerjee. Früm Governor District 6440 - "The Home District" Rotary Club of Northbrook 3211 Glenbrook Drive Northbrook, IL 60062 USA | | Posted by Bob Huckins Ak' Tenamit is an indigenous community development organization based in the rainforests of eastern Guatemala (Río Dulce, Izabal) that promotes long-term solutions to poverty through programs in health, education and family incomes- run by and for the Q'eqchi Maya | | Posted by James Wales The Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills is looking at starting a community based Interact Club. An Interact club is a service club for youth ages 12 to 18 and is part of Rotary International, the world’s first service club organization. Interact involves as many as 200,000 youth through more than 10,000 clubs in 109 countries and geographical areas. Each club varies according to its membership makeup. The Interact clubs are self-supporting and self-governing, although they receive direction and financial support from the sponsoring Rotary club. All Interact clubs sponsor a minimum of two community service projects annually. One project should support an understanding of international goodwill. Another service project should benefit the local community or school. The club meets at least twice monthly. Active members must maintain a 60% attendance record. The Rotary Club of Lake in the Hills is very active in both international and local service projects and it is hoped this philosophy will be mirrored in the sponsored Interact Club. On Monday, August 15, there will be a brief informal meeting at Morettis, starting at approximately 7:30 pm, to discuss what is Interact and feasibility of starting a local community based Interact Club. If interested in attending, please contact either Bob Huckins at bhuckins@nthdegree.com or Jim Wales at jwales@lith.org. | | Posted by Bob Huckins The LITH Community Interact club turned out today to decorate the club sponsored Christmas tree. They chose a “YUMZ” themed decoration, as Erika Huckins, Interact club secretary works at the local frozen yogurt shop. The meeting was held immediately after a recognition meeting that was being held for several youth groups that were instrumental in assisting the Club with Ribfest 2011. At the conclusion of the informational meeting, 20 teens signed up to receive upcoming information on the organizational process. Several of those present indicated they were going to tell other friends as well! The next meeting, which will be organizational in nature, will take place on Monday, August 29, 2011 at 6:30 at Morettis Pizza in Lake in the Hills and is open to all teens ages 12-18 interested in joining the Interact Club. For additional information, please contact either Bob Huckins at bhuckins@nthdegree.com or Jim Wales at jwales@lith.org. | | Posted by James Wales While travelling in Mexico, club member Carlton Ames and his wife Toni, took time out of their schedules to visit the local Roatry Club in Cancun Mexico. Always prepared, Carlton and Toni took part in a flag exchange at the meeting! | | Posted by Carlton Ames on Nov 21, 2011 We will be awarding $500-$1,200 one-year scholarships to graduating high school seniors who reside in Lake in the Hills.
