A Message from 2014 2015 District Governor

Linda Robertson

Rotarians throughout our District LIGHT UP ROTARY in their clubs, communities, district, zone and around the world.

Already this year 32 clubs have increased their membership.  Rotary Club of Vegreville has increased 32%, Lac la Biche 25%, Athabasca 20% and Whitecourt 20%.  Our District to date this year has increased a net of 41 members.  Retaining members is sometimes a challenge and our clubs are doing a great job of doing that this year too.  Unfortunately, a few clubs have seen a net decrease but I know those 15 clubs will be working hard to introduce some new community members to Rotary.

Our District Foundation givings were given a huge boost when a member of the Rotary Club of Edmonton South became a member of the Arch C. Klumph Society with a minimum gift of $250,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation.  His gift will bring Light to many dark places.

Our District was delighted to learn that Ben Doz, from the Rotary Club of Edmonton West received the Rotary International’s  “Service Above Self” Award for 2014-15.  There are only 150 recipients of this world wide honor in any given year. Ben was presented with his award on Rotary Day February 23rd which was also the 60th Anniversary of his club.

The Rotary Club of Riverview just completed Rotary International’s largest VTT (Vocational Training Team).  Operation Esperaza in Cuenca, Ecuador received a Rotary Foundation Global Grant.  The team led by Dr. Tom Greindanus consisted of 41 professionals and support staff.

Our District is also recognized for leadership beyond the district.  Two previous Past District Governors have been appointed to new positions at the Zone level and will work with several Districts across Canada, parts of the US and Russia.  Jackie Hobal will become Zone Coordinator and Betty Screpnek will become Regional Zone Foundation Coordinator.

As we continue LIGHT UP ROTARY let’s be reminded that one of the best ways to keep the light burning is to introduce a friend, family member or associate to Rotary.

Image Rotary Friendship Exchanges are when Rotarians travel to another District in the world.   You are hosted by Rotarians who show you their region. They then come to our District, you host and show them our region.  It is purely for fun and friendship. A fantastic way to travel the world and make friends with people you have something in common with: Rotary! Plans are under way for exchanges in the coming year and it should include you!  Click this page for complete details.  http://serviceaboveself.ca/rfe/

It all started when two of our members visited Lisbon for the Rotary International Conference. The two members that went were: my husband Jeremy McConnell and myself Kristi Larson. Throughout Lisbon I kept on seeing Rotary's "this close" campaign photos. They were on the backs of buses, posters at bus stops, on bill boards and several posters at the conference centre. I said to Jeremy....when we get home I want to do a "this close" campaign in our club and showcase our local celebrities: our members.
