Welcome to Rotary District 5890, composed of sixty-five vibrant clubs across the greater Houston metropolitan area.  The Rotarians in our area truly exemplify Rotary's motto of ''Service Above Self'' with projects in local communities as well as international projects around the world.  Rotary International is working diligently to cross the finish line of eradicating Polio worldwide and District 5890 is working hard to aid in that effort.  So whether your passion is in water projects, literacy, hunger, health, or peace, Rotary has something to offer you.

I encourage you to explore our website for local events and service opportunities as well as information about District 5890.  There are a variety of clubs that meet for breakfast, lunch, and happy hour; and we even have an e-Club for those people who travel for work or have limited time for weekly meetings.  There is a place for you in our Rotary family.

ImageHere are five examples and tips of how you can use social media to help convey "big picture" information about your Rotary Club.
1) Use Facebook’s Timeline to organize continuing coverage:  The Wall Street Journal used Facebook to create a timeline of its coverage of the Facebook IPO by creating a separate timeline as a social landing page for its coverage of the deal. The timeline recounts Facebook’s journey since 2004 when it was launched and includes links to related articles on wsj.com. The paper knew the IPO knew it would be an ongoing story and knew readers were interested, which are key components before undertaking an effort like this.
2) Use Twitter to renew attention to historic figures:  WNYC operates two Twitter feeds specifically for its extensive archives, such as the late New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s audio clips of weekly broadcasts during World War II (it has close to 400 followers on Twitter). Other links to audio from WNYC’s archives showcase history, much “like a treasure hunt”.

As far back as I can remember, there were always bikes in my home. Since there is no better way to explore new neighborhoods or new cities, I’ve been on bicycles most of my life.

When the opportunity to be part of Rotary’s team for El Tour de Tucson came along, I jumped at it without a second thought. Being an avid cyclist, I already ride several times a week, but this gives me a far worthier motivation than adding miles to my bike.

As I sat in the audience at the White House on 7 October, listening to 10 amazing Rotary women tell the stories of their volunteer efforts, two quotes kept running through my mind. First, “Be the change you wish to be in the world” (Mahatma Gandhi) and second, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of people to change the world. In fact, it is the only way it ever has” (Margaret Mead).

The 2014 District 5890 Rotary Foundation Seminar, held on September 20, 2014, was a celebration of the many International and Local Service Projects which were larger in size and scope due to funding from Our Rotary Foundation and was also a celebration of giving by our District’s Rotarians!

I started off the Seminar by saying “If you are one of those Rotarians who think Rotary is still an old man’s organization which never changes – or is changing too slowly – you are in the wrong place, because today, you will see a new face of Rotary and will see how Rotary is changing the world!”

What is an eClub???  Rotary Int'l made provisions for Rotary Clubs to be formed and conduct meetings on the Internet.  These eClubs are fully recognized, same as our traditional Rotary clubs.  Just think of the possibilities -  Meetings Any time 24-7, Anywhere  Have a busy schedule? Need a flexible meeting time? Live in different places throughout the year? Travel frequently?  Have limited mobility?  Then the eClub of Houston may be just for you.

An International Service Project, started in 2000 and supported by Houston Area Rotary Clubs, Rotaract Clubs, and Interact Clubs, is proud to announce the shipment of our 205th 40’ shipping container of books (for a total of over 6-3/4 million pounds), as well as several containers of bicycles & bicycle parts  to Rotarian led literacy projects in Africa and countries around the world.  Would you & your club like to help with the shipment of the next container?

District Governor Bob Gebhard has just released the new District 5890 logo.  This logo will appear on the district leadership shirts in the near future.  Thanks to DG Bob, we now will have distinctive identification when attending Rotary Int'l Convention and Multi-District events.  The logo combines two very important aspects of the Houston area, space industry and oil industry.

Indian Clerics offer to Help Fight Polio in Pakistan - noting that "India is not safe until neighboring Pakistan is Polio-free" , members of India's Rotary Muslim Ulema committee have come forward to offer their assistance in dispelling the myths surrounding Polio vaccinations in Pakistan. Religious leaders have administered Polio drops to their children in front of cameras and they now believe the magic (of zero Polio cases for over 2 years in India) could be repeated in Pakistan.
