3 May 2013 Dear Canadian Rotarian: Over the course of the past year we have asked you to reach out to your Member of Parliament to encourage Canada’s continued financial support for global polio eradication as our highest priority. We are pleased to report that the Canadian Government has heard and responded to the collective appeal of Canadian Rotarians. In addition to the $2.27 million provided by the Canadian Government to match the funds raised by Canadian Rotarians through the Pennies for Polio initiative, Minister of International Cooperation Julian Fantino announced a commitment of C$250 million through 2018 at the Vaccine Summit held in Abu Dhabi. Earlier this week, we were asked by the Minister to attend a small ceremony on Parliament Hill to celebrate the most recent milestone in our longstanding collaboration toward a polio free world. Some twenty five Members of Parliament joined to show their support and commitment. Both CIDA and Rotary issued press releases highlighting this collaboration, and the Wall Street Journal picked up the story. We could not have achieved this result without your active participation and support. We can be proud of what we have achieved and in the knowledge that our actions have had a genuine impact – one that will forever change our world for the better. We encourage you to thank your Member of Parliament for their support of global polio eradication, but this message is really to THANK YOU for your contribution to this positive result. We are this close to a polio free world. We could not have come this far without you and we look forward to the day when we will make history by conquering polio. With sincere appreciation, Wilfrid J. In addition to conducting the business of the District, members attended workshops on a variety of subjects including Membership, Public Relations, Fundraising, Chairing an Effective meeting, ClubRunner and Membership. There were also workshops for Presidents-elect, Secretaries and Treasurers and sessions on Rotary Foundation and New Generations. The event, chaired by Howard Pell, is organized by the District Training Committee. Great job everyone! | | Posted by Mike Gauthier on Mar 25, 2013 District 7080 is among the very first districts in Rotary International to achieve First Class Status under incoming Rotary International President Ron Burton's First Class Initiative. | | Posted by Barbara Fisk on Mar 24, 2013 Rotary Clubs in the Halton region banded together, in partnership with the Degroote School of Business and sponsoring companies to design and successful implement D7080's newest Vocational Services Event! The successful Pythons' Pit took place on March 23 at the DeGroote School of Business in Burlington where Rotary and sponsors hosted 6 amazing Pythons - Nadir Ansari, Don Dalicandro, Randy Pilon, Susanne Mikler, George Minakakis, and John Romano who listened, mentored and offered financial contracts to 8 High School Teams and 6 Open Category teams. The presentations were amazing - from one student braving it as a Grade 9 entrepreneur to Grade 11 and 12 students - all were equally passionate about their business ideas and were well prepared with their business plans. Ideas ranged from pre-packaged, custom made Indian food to sports training devices, to online job search resources to a unique proposition of high heel shoes that were adjustable! Others included designing your own bra, mobilization of restaurants for staffing and order delivery to the ultimate winner of a family brand hot sauce distribution company. The Open category saw adults with propositions in gluten-free muffins, totem bags, custom coolers and 3 highly technical offerings in the dental, medical and corporate worlds. Kudos to all the participants and organizers of this event! Watch for details in the fall for next year's Pythons' Pit! | | Posted by Rajeev Wijesinghe It was Rotary’s New Generations members’ turn to share in President Sakuji Tanaka’s Rock Star presence. On Friday March 1st, an informal evening reception hosted by the Rotary Club of Toronto at the city’s Fairmont Royal York Hotel saw over 200 participants from Districts 7010, 7040, 7070 and 7080 in attendance. Good food, fellowship, and entertainment aside, it was the opportunity to meet Mr. Tanaka that brought these guests together. President Tanaka met with all attendees and posed for hundreds of photographs. He listened with sincere interest where guests were eager to share stories of successful projects. When Youth Exchange students were eager to adorn him with pins from their home countries, he accepted them with gratitude and enthusiasm.
Rotary’s fifth avenue of service was in good company and was well-represented by passionate members of Interact, Rotaract, Rotary Youth Exchange, and Rotary itself.
This evening program took place against a truly Rotary backdrop as the City of Toronto had declared the week of February 24 – March 2 to be “Rotary Week.” Toronto’s City Hall was illuminated in Rotary colours and the Rotary flag was flown all week. The reception was also one of many events during the week that celebrated Rotary’s presence in Toronto and beyond while extending a warm welcome to President Tanaka – the leader whose theme encouraged each Rotarian to strive for “Peace through service.” | | Posted by Stephen Rhodes Javier Ortiz presents the "Dr. Abe Kottuthara Outstanding District Award" to District 7080 Youth Exchange Chair Chris Byrnes in Orlando Florida on Saturday Feb.16th.
