Rotarians Helping Schools in Burma

The Zaytawun School, in the Bagan area, which is the historical heartland of Myanmar (Burma), has only a few thousand people and the children are very poor.  Donations from our District 7170 clubs and individual Rotarians pay for the school supplies, as well as many of the needs of the local clinic, which serves the rural people in an area of several hundred square miles.

"Looking for a Partner? Let's Hook Up.

Dear DG Patricia:

I contacted you after the Rotary International Convention in Sydney and hope that your governorship is going well now that you are into the second month.  We began our fiscal year for Alliance for Smiles at the same time as Rotary and have a number of missions lined up between now and the end of June.  We especially will be having one in March to Bangladesh where we have great relationships with the Rotary Club of Gulshan Lake City and will be planning to write a VTT Global Humanitarian Grant.  We will be most likely writing another grant application for a June 2015 mission but that site has not as yet been determined.  Last year we were successful in getting two VTT grants -- one for two sites in China and another Tanzania -- and a third Global Grant for Nigeria.  We are going to try for grants for China as well but will be meeting with Rotary Clubs in Hong Kong to determine if they want to do it again and act as the host club.

So, my primary concern right now is getting the process going and donations pledged.  The VTT Grant that the Kingspark Rotary Club completed for China involved 26 Rotary Clubs in 4 countries.  We would love to have more Rotary Clubs and Districts buy into these grants and for the Bangladesh and June grants have two Rotarian volunteers in Georgia ready to write them.

I look forward to hearing from you about the possibility of this type of a collaboration.  There will definitely be opportunities for individuals to volunteer both in medical and non-medical slots for these missions.

Light the Way!!!

Yours in Rotary,

Anita Stangl, President and CEO, Alliance for Smiles, Inc.  http://www.allianceforsmiles.org/

Changes in District Grants for 2015-2016 year

Applications are due on or before June 1, 2015.

The Grants Committee will meet around July 15, 2015

The Spending Plan which lists all grants that the district desires to fund will be submitted to The Rotary Foundation by August 1, 2015

We should have approval of the Spending Plan by Sept 1, 2015 and will then provide official notice to clubs. Note that clubs cannot spend funds related to the grant until after they receive official notice of approval.

The per capita amount donated to the Foundation remains at $30 in order for a club to be qualified for a district grant.

The year upon which the per capita amount is calculated will change; it will be based upon the current year 2014-2015. That will allow any club make additional donations and qualify prior to the committee’s deliberation in mid-July. This also eliminates the need for a club with low per capita giving to partner with other clubs as they have time to achieve qualification on their own.

2016 Council on Legislation

Have you ever believed we need to change how we do things in Rotary?  Is there a modification of Rotary’s policies, procedures, or bylaws that you and your Club feel would make Rotary more effective and relevant?  Now is the time to propose a change; your next opportunity is not until 2017!

Program Ideas for Sharing

Some programs that have been interesting to the Unidilla club are:

-Thomas Sears and Radu Cristea presented about Faces of Freedom, Lives of Courage a book they wrote of first-hand accounts of life and persecution in communist Romania.

-Spence and Judy Gridley have an excellent program on the Discover America trip that the foreign exchange students go on in the summer.

-Don and Janice Tuttle can present on our club's current matching grant project - an educational project in Lesotho, Africa

-and, this is more general, but our high school does a musical every year and we've been inviting the students to do a command performance of a song or two at our meetings.

I hope to hear of other potential presentations from other clubs.

Thoughts from an Exchange Student about their year in the USA

Exchange is change. Sudden, brutal, beautiful, hurtful, amazing, unexpected, overwhelming and most of all: constant change. Change in country, language, lifestyle, friends, parents, houses, school… simply everything.

Exchange is realizing that everything you knew before was wrong, but also right in a way.
