DG Tony, (with obligatory cup of Coffee!) enjoyed being part of the annual District Youth Exchange trip to Washington DC recently. The 3 day trip hosted by chair Patti Smith and expertly organized by Elaine Caltibiano Schneider was amazing, all 30 students (this years inbound/next years outbound) along with 2 of our Rotex and other chaperones experienced

D7430 Rotarians Partner with Engineers without Borders
Successful Well Drilling Project in Sierra Leone

Image  Image

The Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter of Engineers without Borders-USA has completed another successful trip to Sierra Leone. Rotary District 7430 is one of the sponsors for this effort. Several clubs in the district are also sponsors.

The well drilled during this trip is now providing over 160 gallons per minute, a flow rate beyond the original expectations. It is anticipated that all water requirements for the school will be able to be met. The well is a 6" diameter borehole that was drilled to a depth of 47 meters below ground surface. A hand pump was installed with the well.  In addition, men’s and women’s staff toilets were installed and are now in use with a bucket flush system. And the wash stations in both the boy’s and girl’s washrooms were repaired….

This successful project was made possible by a Rotary Foundation Global Grant through the generous donations of Rotarians in D-7430 and around the world.

Group Study Exchange to Tochigi Prefecture, Japan
- June/July, 2012
-

Four young professionals and a Rotarian Team Leader from District 7430 left Newark Airport on June 9th, bound for the Tochigi Prefecture, approximately one hour north of Tokyo. The Team was selected by the GSE Committee, under the leadership of Chair Cindy Hornaman. They were met by an enthusiastic District 2550 GSE Committee, chaired by Rotarian Hiroshi Ishijima. Their length of stay in Japan was three (3) weeks.

The team made a total of nine (9) presentations at various Rotary Clubs throughout the Tochigi Prefecture. We were told, upon arrival, that our talks should be in Japanese, which sent us scrambling, but not to be perturbed, we added Japanese above our slides and received coaching on some of the language.  Our presentation covered District 7430 initiatives (Rotoplast, Youth Exchange, ShelterBox, and both Interac and Rotarac Clubs), followed by the Team sharing about our homes, families, work, and hobbies. If time allowed, the presentation ended with a little information about our state. In appreciation of our national pastime, we always concluded with a singing of Take Me Out to the Ball Game while wearing red Phillies shirts.

As our Team moved from one Club to another, we discovered the incoming club presidents were told by the previous club that we were a “healthy” or “spirited” group. It was true, and this news was received by the team as a high compliment.
