Halloween Against Hunger -

Rotary District 7490 Feeds the Hungry

(Part II)

Halloween is Trick or Treat Time

Now is the time for Rotary District 7490 and community organizations to “treat” those who are hungry in our area.

Rotary District 7490 (a local and international volunteer service organization) is sponsoring its second Food Drive – this time benefiting the Center for Food Action in Bergen County.  On Martin Luther King Day, 330+ volunteers packaged 40,000 meals for the hungry in Paterson. This time, we will pack at least 25,000 meals in the heart of Bergen County.

I am sure if you knew someone was hungry, you would feed him/her. On October 25, just before Halowwen,  we are once again asking YOU to help a family, a friend and/or individual get a meal. We need help from all types of community organizations and even children as young as 5 can participate!

 Four Ways You Can Help

  1. Donate to Outreach, Inc. so that we can purchase the ingredients for 100 meals – total cost – only $25.00 – that’s it!!! Or become a Sponsor!
  2. Help pack the meals – total time investment – only 2 hours – that’s it!!!
  3. Ask all your friends, family, vendors, organizations and acquaintances to help  – if you cannot come, send someone! When
  4. Collect food for Center for Food Action - we would like to collect a ton of food (1,000 lbs.)

Become a Sponsor!

 Booster – $25 – purchase – 100 meals

  Bronze - $150 – purchase – 600 meals

                              Silver - $375 – purchase – 1500 meals

 Gold - $500 – purchase – 2000 meals

          Platinum – $1000 - purchase – 4000 meals

*Bronze & Higher Sponsors Will Be Announced and Receive Special Badges*

The Teaneck Rotary Club is sending one person to CAWST in Calgary, Canada, the company that designed the “BioSand Water Filter”, for a 4-day training workshop from July 14 through July 17.  The cost is $600 which covers all materials, handouts, instructions and food for the first day. Airfare and hotel are extra. Expenses are being paid personally, not by the Teaneck club.

We encourage other clubs in the district to send someone for this comprehensive training program that includes instruction and hands-on experience in the construction of all components of the filter, including the concrete containers, sand media, diffuser basins and lids. Participants will gain a clear understanding of the rationale behind the filter design, how to install it and how to instruct householders on the correct usage.

What a great opportunity for clubs interested in sponsoring water projects in developing countries!

This is the only series taking place on our continent this year. Training courses on the biosand filter help to ensure the proper and consistent use of the filters around the world. This knowledge is vital to the success of biosand filter projects and to ensuring the health of users.  Individuals who are trained will then be able to train people locally in the manufacture and use of the filters.

Are you interested in serving your community and the world, but just don’t have the time? Have you ever wanted to, “do more” but didn’t know how to begin? Rotary is your answer! Rotary District 7490, serving Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties,  is now starting a virtual Rotary club that WILL revolve around your schedule.

Many people are forced to work long hours and then deal with family commitments, leaving no time to give back. Rotary is changing that with a virtual Rotary club.

Interested? Send an email to join@district7490erotary.org with your name and a contact email address and/or phone number to get started.

Rotary International is the oldest service club in the world, celebrating its 108th birthday on February 23. In Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties, 55 local Rotary clubs totaling more than 1,300 members provide dictionaries to third graders, bring fresh water to Africa, mentoring students. Rotarians sent more than 100 trucks to communities throughout the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy, and are now assisting in the rebuilding and restocking of vital facilities such as the firehouses in Little Ferry and the ambulance corps in Moonachie and Hoboken.
